Minneota is a city in Lyon County, Minnesota. It was established in 1881 as a stop along a railroad line. The word “minneota” means “much water” in the Dakota language and was used to name the city as it is divided by the Yellow Medicine River, which flows through it. The Dakota word “minnesota” may mean “sky-blue water” or “cloudy water;” the state of Minnesota is named after the river which is muddy and heavy with silt.

RV rentals in Lyon County are your best choice for a relaxing and worry-free RV vacation. While you are here, consider some other locations that might be of interest to you. Ivanhoe was platted in 1901 and named after a novel by Sir Walter Scott; it was made county seat the following year. Canby is the birthplace of Layton Kor, who pioneered rock climbing. The Great Outdoors

Upper Sioux Agency State Park was established in 1963 to preserve an outdoor area protected under a previous government mandate. The landscape is diverse and consists mostly of open prairie knolls, wooded slopes, and scenic bluffs; other features include grasslands, wetlands, and meadows. The park's northern boundary runs alongside the Minnesota River, and its river valley can be seen from its hiking trails and prairie knolls. The valley was created from the advance and retreat of glaciers that occurred thousands of years ago. Visitors can enjoy hiking and horseback riding; nature and wildlife viewing and photography are also popular activities in the park. Guests can ski, snowmobile, and toboggan in the winter.

Camden State Park is situated on a high plateau in southwestern Minnesota called Coteau des Prairies (meaning ”highland of the prairie”); the ground area consists of layers of mixed rock, gravel, sand, and clay on top of shale and sandstone bedrock. The buffalo, elk, and other species that lived here more than 100 years ago are gone and have been replaced by white-tailed deer, raccoons, hawks, and many other species. Visitors can fish for bass and bluegill in Brawner Lake or brown trout in the Redwood River. Nature observers can enjoy the maple, basswood, oak, and cottonwood tree stands, and the flower species that include white trillium and violets. The park is a good destination for picnicking, camping, swimming, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Park your Minneota RV trailer rental nearby, and you can use it for a nature viewing blind while enjoying a beverage.

Lake Cochrane State Recreation Area is just across the South Dakota state line and a short traveling distance from Minneota; it is centered around a spring-fed lake and is open year-round, although some of the public facilities may not be accessible in winter months. It is a popular destination for boaters, anglers, and campers, and on-site activities include a basketball court and golf course. Cabins are available to be rented.

RV Parks

Visitors will have their choice from a number of RV parks and campgrounds, and some of them may have mobile homes or long-term guests. Your Minneota RV rental is your guarantee of a relaxing and comfortable vacation in Lyon County.

Pipestone RV Campground is a family-friendly RV park that is open from early May until around the beginning of October. Guests can enjoy the children's playground, a basketball court, horseshoe pitch, and a heated outdoor swimming pool. There is an on-site laundromat, a camp store with ice cream, and a miniature golf course. Individual sites are nestled amongst a tree stand offering some shade and some open sky and can be rented by the day, week, or month.

Exploring The City

There are numerous things to see and do in Minneota and the surrounding area. Visiting guests should start with the museums, one of which is a World War II museum. It has exhibits and a selection of vehicles and planes that have been painstakingly restored (some are even capable of flight). Another museum is a tribute to author Laura Ingalls Wilder (of the Little House on the Prairie book series). There are a number of urban parks, one of which has a waterfall, and a winery where guests can relax and take in the atmosphere. Don't forget to take your Minneota motorhome rental for a ride on the local highways while you have the chance; driving an RV is an experience you won't want to miss.

There are some notable restaurants in Minneota, but some may be a bit farther out. Almost all of them are locally owned and operated, but there are a few commercial chain restaurants on hand. One bar and grill has a relaxed atmosphere and good service, plus a nice variety of beers on tap. Guests dining here should try the roast chicken with baked potato and a side of coleslaw. Portions are large, so be prepared to take your leftovers home to your Minneota luxury RV rental for a midnight snack. Nothing says vacation like good food, a favorite lawn chair, and a star-filled sky.
