For history lovers, Yorktown is perhaps the most historically significant town in the entire country as it was the location of the most crucial battle of the Revolutionary War where independence was essentially won by the Americans. This unique little town is part of the Historic Triangle of Virginia, along with Williamsburg and Jamestown, both historically important in their own right.

About halfway from Richmond and Virginia Beach, Yorktown has a small number of full-time residents, and primarily serves as a heritage tourism destination for Americans and international visitors. Yorktown Village is the focal point of the small town and holds most of the small businesses. A hotel, some restaurants, pubs, churches, and other small buildings line Water Street, which is one of the main arteries to and from Yorktown. The Yorktown beaches that run alongside Water Street are popular, especially during the summer months. Plunging in the refreshing waters of the York River and Chesapeake Bay while watching the boats travel by is one of the many things to do when you book an RV in Yorktown and revel in the magic and heritage that helped shape America as we know it.

Discover Yorktown

Explore the Outdoors

Yorktown is quaint and cozy, and somehow finds a way to pack all the necessities into a small area. Chief among those necessities are the lovely parks that provide visitors with the space to engage in recreational activities or enjoy the views of the water. Back Creek Park has a boat launch facility, a few picnic areas, and six tennis courts that allow tennis players to play at night under the bright lights. Kiln Creek Park has other facilities like a baseball complex, soccer fields, and some basketball courts in case you feel up for some exercise. The Wetlands Interpretive Sanctuary for Education (WISE) is a two-mile stretch of wetlands and a tranquil walking path that runs parallel to the habitat. WISE is part of Charles Brown Park which is yet another fabulous spot full of walking paths and picnic areas.

When you leave town in your Yorktown RV rental, many incredible outdoors areas will immediately become available to you. Newport News Park, located in the northern parts of Newport News, is the largest park in the area with 8,026 acres. Thirty miles of trails dodge and weave through the park where part of the Battle of Yorktown once occurred, and a bevy of campsites of all different types can be found there as well. The Discovery Area within the park welcomes visitors and engages them with wonderful exhibits and artifacts from the War for Independence and the Civil War. You can also fly model airplanes at the park’s designated flight area or play disc golf on the highly rated 18-hole course.

Plum Tree Island National Wildlife Refuge is another fantastic place to see when you rent an RV in Yorktown; only 200 of the refuge’s 3,501 acres are open to the public, however, due to unexploded bombs in the wetlands that were once used as bombing ranges for the US government. Driving just a little bit past Plum Tree Island in your Yorktown camper rental and you will hit Grandview Nature Preserve, a fantastic place to observe migratory birds or look out onto the gorgeous Chesapeake Bay. These protected tidal creeks, salt marshes, and sandy beaches are crucial to the local ecosystem.

Don’t let the name discourage you, Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is yet another marvelous destination of environmental importance worth visiting in your Yorktown motorhome rental by owner. This fascinating area was once home to escaped slaves living in independent communities away from civilization. The 112,000-acre habitat is great for hiking, photography, birdwatching, boating, and fishing. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, take your Yorktown camper rental to Shenandoah National Park in western Virginia to see the world-famous Skyline Drive that carves through the Blue Ridge Mountains, giving travelers the ride of a lifetime.

City Sightseeing

Virginia is home to one of the very first European colonies, and throughout the state, old architecture from the 17th and 18th century can be found. Particularly in the Historic Triangle, exciting memorials and noteworthy sites can be seen, like the ruins of Jamestown Colony, the first permanent settlement established by the British Empire. Most visitors to Yorktown are there to explore the past and find out for themselves what really took place over when the US went from a ragtag group of rebels to a full-fledged country.

The Yorktown Battlefield is hallowed ground that can be seen, with informative tours and a helpful short orientation film that helps paint a picture for a better understanding of the crucial battle. A museum gift shop on site is a great place to pick up a few souvenirs, too. The Yorktown Victory Monument is another work of art you can see when you rent an RV in Yorktown. This marble masterpiece is 98 feet tall in total when you include the statue at the top, which has been struck by lightning numerous times.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is the next stop on the history tour of Yorktown, and well worth the visit. This living, breathing, outdoors museum is full of exciting exhibits and artifacts, with actors and actresses displaying what life was like when the first settlers reached the shores of Virginia hundreds of years ago. Don’t forget a visit to the Riverwalk and the Yorktown Beach for when you just want a relaxing day enjoying the great outdoors.

RV Parks to Visit

Yorktown itself is quite small, but due to its popularity as a tourism destination, you’ll find that it is quite easy to locate a place to stay overnight when you rent an RV. Anvil Campground is close to Williamsburg and Busch Gardens, making it a convenient place to stay if you enjoy bigger cities or roller coasters.

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park at Gloucester Point is a decent park for families with small children. The famed bear mascots greet all who enter the campground, where a waterpark awaits. Williamsburg/Busch Gardens KOA Campground is known for its amenities. You can take a dip in the large pool during the summer season or rent bikes to ride to nearby Busch Gardens. Newport News Park, mentioned before, is a well-known campground that accommodates those with recreational RVs, so you won’t have to worry when you look for a place to set up camp with your Yorktown rental RV.
