Near the border with Oregon, Woodland is a couple of hours south of Seattle. The city was aptly named for the diverse woodland that sprawled the area by the city’s first merchant and postmaster, Christopher Columbus Bozarth, and his wife. The city was formally founded in 1906 and has since grown into a popular wilderness visit for RV campers and outdoor enthusiasts from all across the country.

Discover Woodland

The Great Outdoors

It is to no surprise that the city of Woodland boasts tremendous opportunities to explore the great wilderness that makes the Pacific Northwest so memorable. Point your RV rental from Woodland south to visit the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Located halfway from the city to the Oregon border and Portland, OR, the refuge is a great visit for bird watching and wildlife viewing. Originally established in 1965 as a winter habitat for the Canada goose, Ridgefield now preserves the habitat for several other species. Additionally, Ridgefield also preserves the most intact lower Columbia River archaeological site. The refuge remembers, studies, and protects over 2,300 years of continuous human occupation of the region.

One of the favorite destinations for visitors and vacationers is the historic Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Iconic to both the region and country, made even more notable for its devastating 1980 eruption which rattled the nation. Hike the volcano's trails alone or with a guide who will tell you all about the science and geology of the area. See and explore the diverse wildlife and flora of the volcano, lava flows, caves, waterfalls, and forest. There are also plenty of other year-round activities to be enjoyed in the park aside, including boating, swimming, fishing, rock climbing, horseback riding, biking, mushing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

The Cedar Creek State Wildlife, halfway between Woodland and Mount St. Helens, is another refuge worth visiting. Park your Woodland camper rental and set out to explore the 127-acre park that provides habitat to the band-tailed pigeon, which is attracted to the mineral springs. A favorite for birdwatchers visiting the region, the park’s ecosystem also features other birds of prey, upland birds, and songbirds.

Take a guided tour of the working mill which first began operation in the mid-to-late 1800s. After watching a demonstration, head back to your camp with a big of fresh-milled flour and cornmeal and whip up a great family dinner.

Continue to explore the region by heading less than a half hour south to historic Vancouver. Discover the history of the northwest at Fort Vancouver on the north bank of the Columbia River. Originally settled as a British fur trading post by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1829, see interactive demonstrations at the fort and barracks. Visit the Pearson Air Museum at the compound and see the legacy of one of the country’s oldest operating airfields. Exhibits at the museum showcase the early civilian and military aviators since the first world war.
