Woodbine, Maryland is an unincorporated town in Howard County established prior to the Civil War. The Confederate Army passed through, crossing the Patapsco River while scouting Union forces heading to Gettysburg (before the Battle of Gettysburg). Woodbine is located on both sides of the river, in Carroll and Howard Counties (the majority of the town is in Howard County). A bridge was constructed in 1916-17, but there was no bridge when the Confederate Army passed through. Woodbine's economy relied on canning in the early 20th century; one cannery built west of Woodbine started out as a wormseed distillery but later processed tomatoes, corn, and peas. A fire in 1933 destroyed it, and the building remained empty until becoming a paper factory in the 1950s. A second, larger cannery was built in the 1920s in Carroll County and operated during the 1920s and 1930s.

Book an RV in Howard County, and you are ready to trace the steps of the Gettysburg soldiers and the county's first settlers. There are other towns you should visit while you are here. Westminster holds a Memorial Day parade and has held it continuously since 1868, making it the longest continuous annual parade in the country. Ellicott City's train station was built in 1830 and is the oldest surviving station in the U.S. Olney takes its name from the home of Sarah Brooke and Dr. Charles Farquhar, two early residents, who named their home after the hometown of their favorite British poet, William Cowper. Rockville is part of a technology corridor with Gaithersburg and Bethesda that accommodates a number of software and biotechnology companies; it is also a hub for upscale regional shopping centers. Clarksburg is renowned for its first inn which hosted the army of General Edward Braddock, the local Sons of Liberty (prior to the American Revolution), and possibly President Andrew Jackson. Your Woodbine travel trailer rental is your passport to this area and its iconic history.

The Great Outdoors

Catoctin Mountain Park is a multi-use nature reserve providing recreational use and environmental education to the public, and also a wildlife habitat. The park is historically important as it provided a retreat for President FD Roosevelt during the Second World War and was an important resource for native cultures before the Europeans arrived. Visitors should start at the Information Center which has park maps and much more. The park is open year-round and offers trails for hiking that range from easy to difficult, and scenic waterfalls, camping, and more.

Liberty Reservoir was constructed by the city of Baltimore in 1956 for the purpose of providing a public water supply. It is a popular destination for anglers, and boating is allowed for rowboats, canoes and kayaks, and boats with electric motors. The reservoir is stocked with a wide variety of fish, some of which have begun to reproduce and grow to anywhere from 12 to 40 pounds in size. Keep your Woodbine RV trailer rental nearby, and you can take your catch straight from the lake to the fridge until dinnertime arrives.

Rock Creek Regional Park is a cultivated outdoor recreational area providing undisturbed nature areas, a golf course, archery range, and treetop obstacle course. Boating and fishing are allowed on either of the two lakes within the park, and visitors can rent boats, canoes, and pedal boats. Visitors can also take a pontoon boat lake tour between May and September. There are miles of hiking trails; some trails have a natural surface, and some are paved. There is a nature center with exhibits and naturalist-led programs showcasing the natural and cultural history of the park.

RV Parks

Ramblin' Pines is a rural RV campground with gated entry and numerous amenities such as exercise and game rooms, bathhouses and laundry facilities, a general store, and more. Guests can enjoy the swimming pool, horseshoe pitch, and a catch-and-release fishing pond. Individual sites have full hookups and plenty of trees providing shade.

Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday is a developed RV park with a camp store selling propane, firewood, and other travel supplies. The park has a pavilion, a swimming pool, and bicycle rentals. Social activities are frequently held, and there are a basketball court and a giant chess set, plus many other games and resources for guests to use. There is a nature trail where guests can hike or enjoy nature and wildlife observation.

Exploring The City

There is lots to see and do around Woodbine, starting with the urban parks. There are vineyards, breweries, and a ghost town at the end of one hiking trail. Those interested in rural life should check out the farms and orchards; guests can pick their own in-season fruit right off the vines. There are museums about local history and other subjects; those seeking an adrenaline rush should head for a local adventure park with go-kart racing, roller coasters, and more. Don't forget to take your Woodbine motorhome rental for a spin; RV driving is a unique experience that can't be replicated, and one that you don't want to miss.

When it's time for dinner, Woodbine once again rises to the occasion. One Italian restaurant has some Puerto Rican items on its menu; on the restaurant side (it has a separate bar area), the kitchen is out in the open. Guests dining here should try the soft fish tacos. One fried chicken restaurant started as an outlet in a grocery store. Popularity led to it becoming a full restaurant. The atmosphere is wall-to-wall chicken-themed kitsch that works. Portions are large so feel free to take your leftovers home to your Woodbine luxury RV rental for a late-night snack.
