Winona Lake is located in Kosciusko County, Indiana, midway between the cities of Elkhart and Fort Wayne.  The lake was formally known as Eagle Lake, but it’s not clear when or why the name was changed, other than perhaps by settlers arriving.

Along the eastern shore is the Winona Lake Historic district of the town of the same name, with many protected and restored buildings.

Baseball fans will recognize the name Billy Sunday, who was from the town and who went on to become a well-known preacher, and his home is now a museum. The town has strong religious connections, being home to the Grace Theological Seminary and until 1990 the headquarters of the Free Methodist Church was based here.

There's a great deal to see and do when you book an RV in Kosciusko County, IN, and renting an RV is the perfect way to do it.

Getting Outdoors

At the southeast end of Winona Lake are the Winona Lake trails. These are a series of loops that can be hiked separately or combined to form a 7-mile trail. The overall grade of the loop is moderate but some parts are easy and suitable for the whole family. Along the way are beautiful views of Winona Lake and plenty of interesting wildlife to look out for.

The out and back Winona Heritage trail is around 2-miles long and all on asphalt, so suitable for the whole family and wheelchairs, and connects with the Winona Lake Trails. It is part of the longer Lake City Greenway and winds its way along the edge of the town of Winona Lake and halfway along, passes through the Winona Lake Park along the water's edge.

Boating is popular on Winona Lake and there are boat ramps available for small boats and canoes etc. Boat rental is available along the water’s edge from business in the town of Winona Lake, along with water sports equipment, fishing tackle and bait.

Fishing from both the shore and a boat is popular on the lake, and common fish caught include bluegill, bass, catfish, crappie, sunfish and walleye. Although camping with an RV is not possible at the lake, there is parking available for day fishing.

Camping at Winona Lake

Even though there are no campgrounds around Winona Lake, a short drive north in your rental RV takes you to the Pike Lake Campground. With 65 campsites on the edge of the lake, it offers a great location and beautiful views. The campsites can cater for the largest rental RV, whatever the size, and there are pull-thru sites for easy access. Full hookup sites are available, with fire-pits and picnic tables and a choice of open or shaded site.  With its quiet and pretty location, this could be the perfect spot for couples wanting to avoid the larger campgrounds.

At the opposite end of the scale is the Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park camp-resort near Pierceton. This campground has just about everything you can imagine and is aimed at families. With hundreds of full hook-up sites, high-quality restrooms and plenty of amenities, this is a great vacation resort for motorhome camping. On-site are two heated swimming pools, a 136-acre lake for fishing, swimming and boating, boat rental, playgrounds, and sports facilities. This is the type of site that you don’t need to leave once you’ve setup up on your site. For family camping with an RV, this campground would be hard to beat.
