The town of Winnemucca lies in the northern deserts of Nevada, near the intersection of Interstate 80 and Highway 95. It was built back in the mid-1800s as a stop on America’s very first transcontinental rail line and boomed as new trade routes were opening up the western frontier. Today, Winnemucca has grown much quieter, acting as stopover point about a quarter of the way from Reno to the next large metropolitan area of Salt Lake City.

Burning Man, one of America’s most beguiling and unique festivals, is held not too far from Winnemucca. While it was originally founded on the beaches of northern California, it’s now held in Black Rock City, a massive salt pan in the desert north of Reno. The gathering brings in thousands of people to enjoy music, artwork, and a spirit of anti-materialism in a week of harmony and spiritual exploration. If you get an RV rental in Winnemucca, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to enjoy.

Discover Winnemucca

The Great Outdoors

Though northern Nevada isn't always associated with outdoor adventure, it has a lot to offer travelers. Not only does it have alien-looking landscapes that aren’t found anywhere else in the country, but it also has the classic beauty of tall mountain peaks peppered with great hiking trails; choosing a travel trailer rental in Winnemucca is one of the best ways to explore these amazing places.

On the outskirts of town, you’ll find the Winnemucca Sand Dunes, an otherworldly sight that’s also an excellent place to romp around. Kids love to play in the massive sand field (though you may want to avoid midday when the temperatures are higher) and you’re sure to get some excellent photographs while you’re there. If you’ve brought a four-legged friend when you rent an RV in Winnemucca, they’re also welcome to frolic in the dunes.

One of the most popular treks in the area is the Winnemucca Mountain Trail. It’s a little less than ten miles long and climbs a couple thousand feet to reach the massive stone “M” overlooking the city. It gets hot during the day, so be sure to wake up early if you want to hike it.

Lake Tahoe is near Carson City and is within a three-hour drive of Winnemucca. It's known for being an outdoor adventure mecca in northern California. Whether you’re looking for hiking, cross-country skiing, kayaking, it’s all available here.

RV Parks

The vast desert plains surrounding the town are prime real estate for RV parks, so you should have no trouble finding a place to stay when you choose a motorhome rental in Winnemucca. New Frontier RV Park is just off I-80 and provides full hookups, laundry facilities, and showers along with fantastic views of Winnemucca Mountain and Sonoma Peak.

If you’d prefer a more rustic space outside the city limits, there’s a Bureau of Land Management campground in the Water Canyon Recreation Area just a short drive away. Sites there have fire rings, but not much else, so come prepared for complete self-sufficiency with your camper rental from Winnemucca.

The Model T Casino on the western edge of town has an RV park that offers electrical hookups, a dump station, and showers. It’s right next to the casino though, so things can be lively at times. There’s also the option of camping in the parking lots of Winnemucca’s Walmart, but be sure to ask for the manager’s permission first.

Exploring the City

Nevada has a rich and fascinating history. It’s full of interesting characters that hit it big or lost everything in the late 19th century when gold mines were opening up all over the northern half the state. To learn more about Winnemucca’s role in that frontier history, check out the Humboldt Museum, which is partially housed in a tiny building that looks like a storefront from the 1800s.

Heading east on I-80, you’ll find the Battle Mountain Cookhouse Museum, which is another great place to explore the area’s history when you book an RV in Winnemucca. The town’s residents have formed a collage of their different life experiences by donating most of the artifacts on display. There are exhibits focused on historical rifles, medical instruments, dresses, shoes, and Native American artwork. It offers a lot to see in a short period of time.

If you’re an animal lover, you’ll also want to take a trip west on the interstate to the Safe Haven Wildlife Sanctuary near Imlay. Many of the exotic animals have been either abandoned or confiscated from negligent owners. This is one of the best places in the state to learn about big cats like lions, tigers, and panthers.
