Originally a settlement with dreams of being a railroad hotspot during the 1850’s, Williamsburg, Iowa has grown into a hardy small town, though it missed out on the railroad boom. Nowadays it’s located just off of I-80, making it an easy place to stop off and rent an RV before heading out to explore the Hawkeye State.

Conveniently located only half an hour’s drive from Iowa City, the state’s 5th largest city and home to many exciting attractions, and even closer to the nearby towns of Conroy and Parnell, there’s plenty to do within an hour’s drive of this sleepy little town.

Whether you want to play in one of the state's largest indoor waterparks, hike in a gorgeous natural setting, or try your hand at archery, you're guaranteed a good time. Book an RV in Iowa County to be perfectly located to set out on your Midwest adventure.

Discover Williamsburg

The Great Outdoors

Once you book an RV in Williamsburg, you’re ready to set out and enjoy the great outdoors! The closest spot to relax and set up camp in some greenery is Lake Iowa Park. The park includes an 83-acre lake, a nature center, and plenty of hiking trails. In the winter there’s cross-country skiing and ice fishing, making this a great destination year round!

Just an hour away, and next to the town of Brighton, is one of Iowa’s best parks, Lake Darling State Park. Cute name aside, this park has a ton to offer travelers. A 13.6-mile trail wraps around the entire lake and will take you through wetland areas, woodlands, and even through a 19th-century cemetery! There are also plenty of options for playing in the lake! Go for a swim or take a paddleboat out.

Head to Hawkeye Wildlife Area, just over half an hour from town, in your RV rental, to enjoy 13,500 acres of nature. Whether you’re interested in birding, hiking, or shooting, there’s something here for you. It’s a birding hotspot during migration seasons, with rare fowl passing through the area. There’s also a shooting range with archery and shooting classes – not to be practiced outside of the range.

RV Parks

Once you’ve picked up a camper rental in Williamsburg, you’re going to need someplace to park it. You won’t have any difficulties finding a place nearby to set up camp. There are plenty of options located nearby.

The nearest place to set up camp is Lake Iowa Park. They have over 100 full hookups with electricity and water throughout the campground. Other than having a pair of nice shower houses, they’re pretty undeveloped in terms of other amenities. On the other hand, it’s right Lake Iowa and ideally located to spend some time hiking!

Head just fifteen minutes East to Oxford, and you will find Sleepy Hollow RV Park and Campground. It’s a great option if you’re traveling with kids. It has full hookups, plus a swimming pool, beachfront, and exciting activities for children each Saturday. This campground also puts you within easy reach of Iowa City and the Hawkeye Wildlife Area.

Exploring the City

Now that you’re ready with your Williamsburg travel trailer rental hit the town! Get the classic Midwest diner experience at any of the town’s many diners. If you’re looking for something a little different, the town also has Chinese, Italian, and Mexican food options. You’ll find restaurants both in the center of town and North towards the business area. The business area is also home to the town’s popular outlet mall if you need to do some shopping!

If you’re traveling with kids, you can’t miss out on the Wasserbahn Waterpark. It’s one of Williamsburg’s biggest attractions. This huge indoor waterpark features 4-story water slides, a swirling Vortex pool, and a large activity pool. There’s also a soothing hot tub and sauna for the adults to have some peace in. Visit the attached game room for some old-school arcade fun!

Take a (totally free!) detour to the Kinze Innovation Center, an interactive gallery dedicated to the inventions of Jon Kinzenbaw, a titan of modern-day farming whose inventions changed the agricultural landscape. It’s a unique museum experience that will give you a better sense of what life is like in the Midwest and how the agricultural industry has evolved over time!

If you want a nice low-key base to do your Iowa explorations from, consider renting a motorhome in Williamsburg. It’s nearby some of the best outdoor spaces in Iowa, but still has amenities and activities worth visiting. What are you waiting for?
