Wiggins is a small town in the high plains of northeast Colorado a little more than an hour's drive from Denver. The way it is situated makes it easy for travelers to get to the Front Range communities and the Pawnee Plains, and a bit farther out, the Rocky Mountains. Originally called Corona, it was renamed in honor of Oliver Wiggins who guided the explorer John Fremont on his expeditions through northern Colorado in the mid-19th century.

Wiggins had its start as a depot for the Burlington and Missouri Railroad Company as the rail expanded west and eventually reached Denver in 1882. Though tiny in size, Wiggins is an outpost for a range of businesses supporting agriculture and small manufacturing companies that surround it. For travelers taking their RV rentals in Wiggins to exciting destinations out of town, this laidback community deserves its nickname as the gateway to the Plains and the Rockies.

Discover Wiggins

Birds, Buttes, and Bighorn Sheep

For a spot of fishing, birding, and boating, you only need to take a short drive to 2,400-acre Jackson Lake State Park, about a half an hour’s drive by Wiggins camper rental. Bring binoculars and you just might spy hawks, curlews, and whooping cranes. Toss out a line for walleye, pike, and bass. Or give your legs a good workout on a hike along the north shore or an exhilarating ride on their off-highway vehicle dirt track.

You might think that a sea of grass is devoid of any wildlife, but at the Pawnee National Grassland, the never-ending lush native prairie harbors a variety of birdlife that avid birders wouldn't want to miss. Take your motorhome rental in Wiggins to the Pawnee Buttes, the sandstone remains of a geological uplift forming two humps rising 300 feet straight up into the sky. Falcons, hawks, and swallows could be spotted around the cliffs so keep your eyes peeled. Also keep an eye out for fossils and archaeological remains (just look, don't touch) as you explore the area.

From Wiggins' elevation at more than 4,500 feet, you'd only be gaining between 4,000 feet to 10,000 feet as you approach the Rocky Mountain National Park by Wiggins camper rental. Drive over the majestic and wide open Trail Ridge Road or the slower and intimate Old Fall River Road. Or venture on foot through the park's 30-mile continental Divide National Scenic Trail that will take you through montane and subalpine ecosystems at elevations between 8,000 to 11,500 feet. If you are up for more challenge, test your climbing skills at the 'fourteener' Longs Peak.

Like the millions of visitors RMNP receives each year, you likely came here to stare at wildlife. Plan to start early, just after sunrise, at Moraine Park to spy on massive bugling elk. Time your visit from May to mid-August for a good look at bighorn sheep. And to catch a glimpse of the park's elusive moose, stake a good spot along the Colorado River in the Kawuneeche Valley on the west side of RMNP.

Where to Park Your RV

Wiggins measures less than a square mile so the few RV parks you can find are outside of town, one of the closest of which is in Fort Morgan where I-76 meets Hwy 34. Emerald Park offers a convenient location for an overnight stay (most of the campgrounds and RV parks in Fort Morgan are for extended stay). You’ll get hookups for water, electricity, and sewer, and find bathrooms and showers. There is also a convenience store, steakhouse, and fuel station nearby.

Some of the options you’ll find within 20 miles are in Weldona. If you’re willing to travel that far, a state park camping experience may prove a worthwhile alternative. Bring your travel trailer rental from Wiggins to Jackson Lake State Park and you’ll find electric sites, showers, and pit/vault toilet. There’s also a dump station on site.

Wiggins is located just off I-76 and campgrounds along this corridor are hard to come by. If you just need a place to spend the night, check with the Walmart store in Fort Morgan to see if they allow overnight parking. Get the store manager’s approval and you’re set.

There are a few gas stations in Wiggins, so ensure your tanks are full before leaving town. You’ll also find a lone truck stop along the interstate where you can both refuel and stock up on provisions.

Relive the History of Morgan County

Drive your RV rental from Wiggins, CO to Fort Morgan and see what pioneer life was like in the Northeast Plains and the Morgan County at the city’s museum. The museum abounds with arrowheads, stone tools, and other exhibits of Native American life on the Great Plains as well as the history of farming in this corner of Colorado. There is also a section devoted to the history of the Overland Trail, railroads, and Fort Morgan's hometown pride, the swing era's big band leader, Glenn Miller.

Along Fort Morgan’s Sherman Street, you'll find a collection of private houses built from 1886 to 1926 that have earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of these are Victorian in design while a few are Dutch Colonial Revival, Edwardian Vernacular, and American Foursquare. There are more than a dozen on the list, and while they’re not open to the public, the houses can be viewed on a self-guided walking tour.

In Wiggins, the Old Trail School has remained nearly intact for over 150 years. One-room "prairie schools" such as the Old Trail School were built to serve the needs of the scattered population of school-age children. These modest structures provided the 3R’s of education to generations of pioneer children.

If American comfort food satisfies your cravings, you won’t be disappointed in Wiggins. Mexican fares are on offer too. In Fort Morgan, the culinary offerings are more diverse. Mexican staples are available along with Asian offerings like wonton, dumplings, and sushi. You'll also find steaks, BBQs, and pub and grill fares. If you need quick bites, you'll find several places offering pizza, burgers, and fries.

Wiggins may be pint-sized but the adventure potential it holds is way more promising. Dig beneath the surface and you just might be delightfully surprised. Delay no more and go on an adventure. Book an RV rental in Wiggins, CO today and "come to life".
