Not to be confused with West Point, NY, where the renowned military academy is located, West Point of Pennsylvania is a quiet town on the outskirts of Philadelphia. Although the town was not officially established until 1878, there were settlers in the area as early as 1699, and a majority were Quakers. Several historic homes, listed on the National Register of Historic Homes, are still standing today. Most were built in 19th century, though a few were built in 18th.

The closest large town is Philadelphia, about 25 miles to the south. Allentown is 40 miles north and Reading, (pronounced as “red-ding”) is just over 40 miles west.

Discover West Point

The Great Outdoors

When you rent a motorhome in West Point, no doubt you’ll want to go explore the outdoor recreational activities in the area. Though the Philadelphia sprawl is fast spreading, there are still plenty of options in the area. Evansburg State Park, which is just a few minutes away from town, is a small 1,000-acre park that offers a few miles of horseback riding, hiking, and bicycling trails through mature woods, meadows, and old farmlands. The Skippack Creek, which runs through the park, is rife with smallmouth bass, brown and rainbow trouts, catfish, and carp. If you’re feeling adventurous, catch a few crayfish (aka crawfish or crawdads) and have a “lobster” boil. Note, similarly to fishing; you must have a license for catching these.

Bring your West Point travel trailer to French Creek State Park, a 7,700-acre park that straddles Schuylkill Highlands (shoo-kill), and it is the largest park in between New York City and Washington, D.C. The mix of forests, wetlands, and aquatic terrains offer a variety of activities for everyone. Hike, fish, and photograph. The trails wind through scenic woods, and hikers will occasionally come across a remnants from a bygone era, like old bridge, abandoned forgets, and mills that once dotted the area. A sharp-eyed birdwatcher may spot uncommon birds like Indigo Bunting and Scarlet Tanager.

RV Parks

When you rent a motorhome in West Point, you’ll need someplace to park it while you explore the area. There are a few options within 15 miles with the closest being Village Scene RV Park in Hatfield. They offer 20/30/50 amps hookups for your RV, bathroom and shower facilities, and WiFi.

Homestead Campground in Green Lane offers similar amenities in a more rustic setting

If you prefer a location close to wilderness, the French Creek State Park provides plenty of space for RVs and trailers. Space is limited for the full-hookup lots; reserve ahead of time, especially in summers.

Exploring the City

Even in the outskirts of Pennsylvania, you can’t escape history. Embrace it! The Fonthill Castle and Mercer Museum is a local curiosity. Built in late 19th century, the castle is an odd mashup of Gothic, Medieval and Byzantine architectural styles. The Mercer Museum, located on the same property, showcases life in the 18th and 19th century with over 40,000 artifacts on display.

Peter Wentz Farmland and Morgan Log House, which are just a few minutes away from West Point, depicts life in 18th-century world. Learn what it was like to live in a home far removed from society, and how people not only survived but also thrived in that time with limited technology.

Valley Forge, the site of the defining event in this nation’s history, is one of the few places that evokes a sense of patriotism, tenacity, and independence. Consider the cold, harsh winter that General Washington and his men endured to free this country from the grips of England. There are guided tours by foot, bicycle, car or trolley.

Head into Philadelphia for even more history. The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Franklin Institute and National Constitution Center are popular destinations for history-lovers. There are walking tours guided by experts, and most will dress the part, too.

Philadelphia isn’t solely about history, though. The Philadelphia Museum of Art exhibits a wide array of art created by some of the world’s finest artists. Diego Rivera, Claude Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh are just a few of many fabulous artists on permanent display.

Philadelphia Zoo, though small, is no less mighty! This tiny zoo is home to 1,300 animals, some of which are endangered, such as the Amur leopard and western lowland gorilla. Opt-in for behind-the-scenes tour for a chance to interact with some of your favorite critters up close and personal.

In an area rife with colorful history, join a ghost tour of Philadelphia, which will give you an unique insight into the people who lived -- and died -- so long ago. Prowl the back streets, hidden gardens, and nearly forgotten cemeteries for a glimpse of the wailing woman or brooding wisp of a man.

After a long day of adventure and sightseeing in your West Point camper rental, visit a winery to relax and unwind. The Cardinal Hollow Winery in West Point is known for its unique experiments with wines, such as the jalapeno and agave wines. They also have a more traditional selection for you to choose from.

If it's the local Pennsylvania history you are seeking, consider a travel trailer rental in West Point. Enjoy the recreational activities, explore the local cuisine options, and take in the amazing landscape. Rent an RV in West Point, PA and set out on an amazing outdoor adventure!
