Originally incorporated in 1836, and reincorporated in 1901 after the charter lapsed, Wedowee, Alabama is a small village in Randolph County. The name for this Alabama town comes from the Muscogee Creek language, used by a local tribe of indigenous people who lived in the area for centuries before being forcibly removed. The word Wedowee means “Old Water” and was chosen by a Muscogee Creek chieftain.

Wedowee occupies an aesthetically pleasing area in the South known for its rolling hills, untamed forests, and wide-open lakes. While the town of under a thousand people will only entertain you so much, there is infinite beauty to immerse yourself in when you book an RV in Wedowee. The town is situated quite close to the Alabama-Georgia state line and is not far from Interstate 20 which connects the cities of Birmingham and Atlanta, making it easy to get to and from town when you rent an RV.

The Great Outdoors

You won’t find many other states more outdoor-oriented than Alabama, where the people spend a great deal of their time outside due to a favorable climate and lots of open space. The people of Wedowee usually take time to visit Lake Wedowee, a human-made lake not far from town created by impounding the Tallapoosa River. There is lots of fun to be had on this lake, a true hotspot for summertime recreation. Whether it's boating, fishing, swimming, or lounging on the beach, there are numerous ways to spend your day at this wonderful body of water. On the far side of the lake, you can even camp out at Flat Rock Park with your Wedowee RV rental by owner.

To the south about halfway to the state capital of Montgomery, Wind Creek State Park has one of the country’s largest state-owned campgrounds. The massive Lake Martin is the central defining feature of this epic park, with some excellent freshwater fishing. In fact, the park hosts several fishing tournaments throughout the year, drawing people in from all around the country. You can stay at one of the park’s camping sites with your Wedowee motorhome rental, while others may opt to stay in a cozy rental cabin provided by the park.

If you bring your Wedowee motorhome rental over towards the city of Birmingham, you can stop at Oak Mountain State Park, another marvelous facility run by the state of Alabama. This publicly-owned recreation area is a popular spot for city residents to escape the hustle and bustle of Birmingham and go camping during the weekend. Hiking, swimming, fishing, horseback riding, and even golf are part of the fun at Alabama’s largest state park, and you can even visit the Alabama Wildlife Center on site to learn about the local wildlife native to Alabama.

Back near Wedowee, the Talladega National Forest is a spectacular place to explore and camp out under the stars. This once eroded wasteland was one that was strip-mined, over-harvested for timber, and abused for profit, but after careful planning and lots of hard work, it has been restored to its previous state. This exciting mix of forests, wildflower-laden meadows, rolling hills, and ancient mountains truly makes for a special and memorable experience.

RV Parks

There are more than enough parks and campgrounds to choose from when you rent an RV in Wedowee. Cane Creek RV Park has open meadows and a network of hiking trails. You can walk your pets, swim or fish in the creek, and a whole lot more.

If you feel like catching a race at Talladega Speedway, Talladega Creekside Resort is a good place to consider. The park is only eight miles from the race track, and full of exciting activities like tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming in the creek that runs adjacent to it.

Exploring the City

Wedowee is a beautiful, peaceful village out in the middle of what feels like nowhere, with a pleasant atmosphere, and a slew of historic homes to look at. The Randolph County Courthouse is simple yet elegant, even if it isn’t crafted from marble or granite like some of the more ornate courthouses in the South. Downtown Wedowee is made up of a few small roads lined with locally owned businesses, restaurants, and old brick buildings.

If you yearn to see more memorable attractions, the small city of Talladega is not far from Wedowee, and well worth a visit. The Ritz Theatre is one of the town’s most beloved landmarks, built back in 1936. This Art Deco-style theater is run by a non-profit tasked with preserving the landmark while ensuring that the public can still enjoy plays, movie screenings, and other live events. While it isn’t a conventional movie theater, there are frequent film screenings inside, and lots of Broadway-style musicals and plays put on for the enjoyment of the general public.

Talladega is perhaps most well-known for the Talladega Superspeedway, a real treat for fans of NASCAR or racing in general. This massive structure can fit around 200,000 people, and race days are all in all a fantastic time with tailgating, dancing, grilling, and a party-like atmosphere. Additionally, there are lots of racing experiences and driving schools in town for people who want to feel what it is like to drive a stock car, as well as the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, where you can learn about the evolution of NASCAR and pro racing, or see famous cars from Hall of Fame drivers.
