In the 1950s, Wautoma earned the nickname as the “Christmas tree capital of the world,” because the town grows Christmas trees on roughly 10,000 acres of land around town. Today, visitors can enjoy the quaint and historic downtown area as they retreat to this small town. With a relatively central location in Wisconsin, visitors to Wautoma will be able to easily access a multitude of state parks, a variety of lakes, and even the Great Lake of Lake Michigan. With so many recreational opportunities around town, there is never a dull moment when you rent an RV in central Wisconsin.

The Great Outdoors

Just a short drive southeast of town is the White River Marsh State Wildlife Area in Princeton. At just 12,000 acres, this wildlife area is considered a bit of a local gem. If you’re visiting in the summer, you’ll be able to enjoy the hiking trails, canoeing, and even biking. If you’re traveling to the area in the winter, you’ll be able to use the hiking trails as cross-country skiing trails. No matter what season you plan on visiting, you will be in a prime location to see some of Wisconsin’s beautiful wildlife thanks to the No Entry Wildlife Refuge that attracts wildlife to the area. While you can’t go into the refuge, the wildlife in the area tends to be plentiful.

One of the largest wildlife areas in the state, the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area is in Mosinee. A wonderful day trip from Wautoma, Mead (as it’s locally known) covers an expansive tract of land filled with marshes, forests, and even grasslands. You can even visit a rare conifer bog habitat at Mead. Over 250 bird species either call Mead home or use it as a stopover point during migrations, making it a wonderful destination for birders. With 70 miles of hiking trails, you are sure to come across plenty of beautiful wildlife.

For those who want to spend some time on the water, you can head to the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit in Kewaskum. A great day trip from Wautoma, southeast of town and toward Lake Michigan, Kettle Moraine is home to dozens of bodies of water, many of which are opening to fishing and boating. If you want to explore the lakes and ponds, you can rent a canoe or kayak at the park and paddle stress-free. There are also plenty of trails to explore if you’d rather admire the lakes from a little bit more distance.

Explore the City

Those interested in learning about some local history can head north of town to the Hutchinson Historical House. The home was built in 1854 and offers a look into the Victorian lifestyle of the time. Visitors to the museum will see furniture, artwork, kitchenware, and clothing. There are often events geared towards children.

If your hikes and journeys through Wisconsin’s wilds have left you wanting to see more furry friends, then you can visit the Animal Haven Farm Zoo. At the zoo, you will be able to get up close and personal to bears, tigers, birds of paradise, lemurs, and so much more. There is also a petting zoo where you can meet some local farm animals.
