Warner Robins is a mid-size city in Houston County, Georgia, and one of Georgia's fastest growing cities. It is located 20 miles south of Macon.

Prior to 1942, Warner Robins' area was farmland, peach groves, and one small sawmill. The farming community was named Wellston and was known for its railroad stop. In 1940-41, U.S. Congressman Carl Vinson, Wellston community leader Charles Watson, and Macon city officials petitioned the federal government to become an Air Force base. The first base commander, Colonel Charles Thomas, was prevented from naming the base after his mentor by military regulations. Colonel Thomas, not to be dissuaded, convinced Vinson and the others to rename the city after Augustine Warner Robins, which they did on September 1, 1942. On October 14, Wellston Army Air Depot was renamed Warner Robins Air Depot (or Warner Robins Air Force Base).

The base is a large employer for residents in the area and has provided a stable economy since its establishment. In May 2009, it was listed as one of four Georgian metro areas with less than nine months of recession in fifteen years. Business Week and Money magazines have named Warner Robins “the best place in Georgia to raise a family” and one of the best small cities to live in, respectively. Four universities and two colleges are located within its city limits.

The Great Outdoors

Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge was at one time a deforested area but through conservation efforts is once again a forest of pines and hardwoods. It is home to the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species, and to bobcats. Activities allowed here include hunting and fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, and bird watching, photography and more. Visitors can participate in the volunteer program, to learn more about the refuge and the type of work done; hunters and anglers may require a license. With your Warner Robins motorhome rental nearby, you can explore and relax, enjoying the best of both worlds.

Ocmulgee Wildlife Management Area is a 15,000-acre property that allows canoeing, boating and wildlife viewing; hunting is allowed for deer, turkey, and small game. It has an archery and shooting range, hiking trails, and courses on hunting and safe hiking practices.

RV Parks

There aren’t many RV resorts within or on the outskirts of Warner Robins, but some are farther out, so you should be able to find a decent place to park the travel trailer rental near Warner Robins.

Lake Tobesofkee Claystone Park is located 20 miles north in Warner Robins; it has RV sites with full hookups (water, sewer and 30/50 amp electricity). The campground is located on rolling hills, so some campsites aren't level. Some of the sites have concrete pads. The campground has showers and restrooms, laundry facilities, a beach where you can swim, hiking trails, a playground, frisbee golf and an area where you can fish.

Twin Oaks RV Park & Campground, 25 miles southwest in Elko has RV sites with full hookups (water, sewer and 30/50 amp electricity) and Wi-Fi, pull through sites and big rig access. The campground has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, a swimming pool and recreation area, and an area for walking your dog. Propane can be purchased on site.

Exploring The City

There is no shortage of things to do when you rent an RV in Warner Robins; the only challenge you might face here is trying to fit everything into your stay (or deciding what to leave out). There are hiking trails within the city for those who don't want to travel too far to get some fresh air and nature, and a selection of museums, one of which is dedicated to aviation. There are entertainment outlets for both younger children and teenagers, as well as a selection of day spas for the adults. Indoor athletes can take in a round of bowling while the artistic types can visit a paint and pottery gallery, and perhaps even join in a class.

Vacation is a time to leave your watches behind, but when your stomach begins to remind you what time it is, Warner Robins is more than happy to intervene. There is a wide selection of cuisines to choose from which are not too expensive; dinner bills range from cheap eats to moderately priced, especially nice if there are more than two of you at the table. The more popular cuisines are here, of course, Japanese and Chinese, Italian and Mexican, barbecue and so on, but customers can also dine out on Greek and Cuban menus. There is even one outlet that specialized in hamburgers and hot dogs, and nothing else (and your kids will love you for it).

If your Warner Robins RV rental comes equipped with its own cooking facilities you can bring back what you couldn't finish in the restaurant for a late night snack, or better yet, get take out and enjoy the entire meal under the stars. When dining out starts to lose its appeal, grab some groceries and whip up a good home cooked meal in your camper rental near Warner Robins.
