Originally a Lenape tribe hunting grounds, the region that would become Wagontown was a part of the land granted to William Penn. One of the oldest buildings, built in 1736, was known as the Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Inn. It was later purchased by a newcomer and renamed to Sign of the Waggon, which is likely how Wagontown came by its name. This building is still standing today. Underneath the Waggon is a small series of cavern and tunnels. Based on the reinforcements, which are in line with what was used in mid-1800s, and artifacts found in these tunnels, historians believe the Waggon and the underground cave may have been used as an Underground Railroad “way station” (also known as a safe house) to transport slaves north.

Today, Wagontown is a bedroom community for Philadelphia. The closest large town is Coatesville, about four miles south.

The Great Outdoors

Rent an RV, and a whole world of adventure and fun will open up. There are many wilderness parks around Wagontown. Sadsbury Woods preserve is a part of the largest, unfragmented woodlands in the area. The preserve is a protected habitat, home to several rare birds including the Scarlet Tanager and Ovenbird. The headwaters of Bucks Run, a major Brandywine Creek tributary, is found in this preserve. Although this park is small, there are several miles of scenic trails with plentiful opportunities for nature photography.

Nearby Marsh Creek State Park, almost 2,000 acres, is beloved by the locals. Hike, bike, horseback ride, fish, boat, and more. Surrounded by rolling hills, the Marsh Creek Reservoir is rarely disturbed by strong winds in wintertime, and when the lake freezes up, the surface is usually smooth. As a result, ice skating and ice-sailing are popular wintertime activities, as are ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and sledding. Wildlife are plentiful, particularly birds and waterfowls during the migration season. The lake is a popular stopover spot. Although this is a day-use park, there are a handful of private campgrounds in the area that can accommodate your Wagontown camper rental.

RV Parks

When you book a motorhome in Wagontown, don’t forget to find a place to park overnight while you hit the sack. Hidden Acres Campground in Coatesville, PA, has full hookups with 30 and 50 amps, and family-friendly playgrounds and easy access to hiking trails. They also boast a world’s largest, original steel sliding board, though that claim isn’t confirmed by Guinness World Records.

For longer stays, Birchview Campground may be an option. A part of the grounds is in the woods, and part in an open field. It features a number of planned activities like wagon rides, live bands, spirited softball, and volleyball tournaments, and others. One potential snag: this site offers only weekly or monthly rates.

Exploring the City

Though Wagontown is a mix of a bedroom and farming community, there’s plenty of things to see and do. Highway 30 makes it a snap to take a jump into your rental RV and zoom into Philadelphia’s suburbs or into the heart of the city. Even this far out in the boonies, there’s plenty of history that’ll fire up any would-be archaeologists and historians’ imaginations. Nearby Hibernia Park, in addition to miles of hiking trails, is also home to the Hibernia Mansion, a landmark building that is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. Once the site of a bustling iron foundry and processor, it was turned into a gentle country estate in late 1900s. Tours of the mansion’s interior are available between the end of May and beginning of September.

Strasburg Rail Road in Ronks, PA, offers a 45-minute ride on a genuine steam train through the Amish Country, turning around in Paradise. Train rides are completed with reenactments of train robberies. Dastardly Bonnie and Clyde duo will attempt to nab a guest of honor’s precious jewels and baubles. The other guests on the train will be provided with ‘loot’ to fork over when the pair utter the time-worn phrase, “stick ‘em up!”

Most Amish communities are private and disallow the non-Amish, also known as English, to visit. However, there are a handful of private tour groups that are pre-approved, allowing their passengers to not only tour the countryside but also visit a few farms for a hands-on look at the farming life without modern technologies and amenities. One such example is the Amish Experience, which embarks from the outskirts of Lancaster.

While you’re exploring this part of Pennsylvania in your Mendenhall travel trailer rental, be sure to stop at Valley Forge and take a moment to appreciate the losses and sacrifices that this country’s soldiers made in the name of freedom.

In spite of the distance from Philadelphia, there’s plenty of history and adventure to be had. Hop into your luxury motorhome rental from Mendenhall, PA and go exploring!
