High up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado is the tiny city of Victor. The town is named for the Victor Mine, an industrial mine established near town after the discovery of gold in the surrounding area spurred an influx of people. The town is now a shell of itself, with some small-scale mining operations still remaining, but after the mines were depleted, many of the residents left as quickly as they had arrived.

Together with the nearby town of Cripple Creek, the Teller County mining district became one of the most profitable in the country with over ten billion dollars of ore extracted from the mountains. When you book an RV in Victor, you see a sleepy town with glimpses of its former glory. Lovely old buildings remain, surrounded by stunning mountains and large swaths of evergreen forests.

Discover Victor

Explore the Outdoors

There is a myriad of outdoor attractions, parks, forests, mountains, lakes, and recreation areas in Colorado to stumble upon, many of which are located quite close to Victor. You can rent an RV in town and be out in the woods an hour later with your Victor camper rental, ready for action. Eleven Mile State Park is a fabulous place to start your trip off right and it's only an hour’s drive through the stunning mountain passes of the Rockies. Eleven Mile State Park has a large reservoir that acts as the main focal point, where swimming, boating, and especially fishing are possible. You can camp beside the scenic lake and enjoy exquisite views of the sun setting over the water, while the marvelous mountains provide a picturesque backdrop.

Down by the city of Pueblo to the southeast, Lake Pueblo State Park is another lake-centric park where you can take your Victor RV rental by owner. Ten thousand acres of land and over 60 miles of shore line the lake, giving visitors ample space to relax on their own private stretch of beach. Two marinas ensure that guests can keep their boats in the water and a range of recreational facilities make visits to the park memorable. You can also camp beside the lake if you rent an RV and bring it to the lakefront campgrounds of Lake Pueblo.

Pike National Forest practically surrounds the town of Victor on all sides and makes up one of the largest forested wilderness areas in the state with over a million acres of pristine land. The forest is littered with epic mountains like Cheyenne Mountain and the eponymous Pikes Peak which is named for Zebulon Pike, one of the first American explorers to see the massive geological feature. There are three wilderness areas to trek through, and plenty of campgrounds that can accommodate your Victor motorhome rental while you travel through the forest.

You cannot go wrong visiting one of the state’s incredible national parks, like Great Sand Dunes National Park, which is home to towering sand dunes that look out of place in the middle of Colorado. These breathtaking natural dunes sit beneath the Rocky Mountains making for excellent pictures and views. You can camp in the park at a few of its cozy campgrounds or rent a sandboard and cruise down the massive mountains of sand.

RV Parks to Visit

Teller County is fully loaded with great places to camp since its economy thrives off of its outdoor tourism. Eagles Nest RV Park is located in downtown Cripple Creek and could be a nice alternative if you want to see a different mountain town full of its own exciting attractions. Cripple Creek KOA is one of the highest campgrounds in the country at over 10,000 feet in elevation. Wide open campsites, a pavilion, and a pet park are some of the features you can find at the breathtaking campground high up in the mountains. Eleven Mile State Park, Lake Pueblo State Park, Spinney Mountain State Park, and Pike National Forest are all full of places to camp among nature, so try to make your way to at least one of these places to enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountains.

City Sightseeing

Victor might not be the thriving town it once was, but traces of its incredible history still remain when you rent an RV and tour the small city. The streets are lined with charming brick buildings that were built over 100 years ago during the great gold rush that put the town on the map in the first place. The Victor City Hall, the First Baptist Church, and the old Victor Hotel are some of the beautiful buildings you can see while strolling through town, particularly in the Victor Downtown Historic District. There are lots of old gold mines in and around town that you can tour if you have the time. The American Eagles Overlook and Historic Mine, and the Victor Gold Mining Company both give guided tours of these old complexes while dispensing insightful information about the town’s mining past.

The Lowell Thomas Museum in Victor brings the memories and stories of Lowell Thomas to life while taking guests on tours of the author’s house. Lots of mining history can be read about in the museum's exhibits in addition to learning about the enthralling life of Lowell Thomas. You can head to the nearby town of Cripple Creek for several other mine tours and historical museums if you feel like taking your Victor camper rental for a mini road trip.
