Union City is a village on the St Joseph River in Branch County, Michigan. Sitting just south of Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. When you book an RV rental in Branch County, the Great Lakes of North America are on your doorstep and easily accessible.

The towns first inhabitant was Justin Goodwin, who built a mill and was the towns first postmaster. He initially named the town after himself, but after selling several hundred acres of land, the new owners finally agreed on the name of Union City.

Station number two of the Underground Railroad was located here and was used to help slaves fleeing to free states or Canada. It is comprised of a network of secret routes and safe houses supported by anyone sympathetic to the cause.

The village is home to well-known author Patricia Polacco who was born in nearby Lansing and has written many children's books. She has also been instrumental in helping to restore some Victorian buildings in Union City.

The Great Outdoors

Formed when the St Joseph River was dammed to provide water for the area, Union Lake has been transformed into a nearly 500-acre water sports center. There are many boat ramps scattered along the shoreline, along with campsites and opportunities to fish. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon in your luxury motorhome rental from Union City.

Just a few miles northwest of Union City and easily accessible when you rent an RV is the Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary. The rescue facility is open to the public and offers daily tours and even animal interactions if you feel brave enough! Any reptiles brought to the sanctuary are guaranteed a home for the rest of its life and the center work with schools and universities to promote awareness of these incredible animals.

Covering an area of some 3,000 acres, Fort Custer State Recreation Area is a short drive north one you collect your motorhome rental in Union City. Originally used as a military training center, the land was acquired for public use in 1971. Since then, over twenty-five miles of multi-use trails have been developed allowing hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The three lakes in the park available for fishing plus the Kalamazoo River run along the western edge of the park. It’s also a great area for bird-watching, with many species of waterfowl in particular.

RV Parks

Potawatomie Campground and Recreational Area is located on the shore of Fox Lake, one of three interconnected lakes with sites spread through the parks wooded areas. The campground offers both a limited number of full hookup sites for your camper rental from Union City, along with many bare sites for those that are more self-sufficient. Along with boat hire for the lakes, fishing is allowed, there’s a sandy beach for the kids and some sports facilities. It’s a relatively quiet site that could be good for getting away from the hustle and bustle of larger campgrounds.

Located in Coldwater, the Waffle Farm Campground offers four hundred sites along the shoreline of Craig Lake and Morrison Lake. All sites have electric hook-up, cable TV and WiFi, plus there are restrooms and showers for your convenience. To take advantage of the lake location, there is a large swimming beach and boat launch area to enjoy the excellent fishing available.

Exploring the City

The Union City Heritage Water Trail is a fantastic way of getting to know the city. Several companies have been set up to hire boats and kayaks, making it easy to get on the water and explore the twenty-eight historical sites along the 5-mile route. Along the way, you’ll also find several stops for cafes and restaurants, for a fun day on the river.

Hammond House Museum is housed in one of Union City’s first grand homes, built by Deacon Chester Hammond around 1836. It was originally part of a 200-acre plot of land, but now just the house is open for visitors to appreciate how the people of Union City lived in the 1800s.

Meteor Ridge Farm is the home to author Patricia Polacco and is a lovingly restored building from the 1800s, once known as the plantation. The house gained the new name after a meteor landed in the backyard while her grandparents owned the property.

Capture a little of bygone days at the Capri Drive-in theater near Coldwater. You’ll have to park at the back if you take your RV rental from Union City of course, but worth it to enjoy this family event that has been operating since 1964. The drive-in has been owned and operated by the same family since the very beginning, and they are continually upgrading the facility to ensure a great future of fun family times.
