Nestled in the eastern foothills of the North Cascade Mountains, Twisp is a small town in the heart of Okanogan County. It lies at the confluence of the Twisp and Methow rivers in the far northwest reaches of Washington, with a history of European settlement that dates back to the 1890s.

Mining, agriculture, and forestry long dominated the town’s economy while tourism is one of its most important industries today. Twisp’s proximity to the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and Lake Chelan make it a popular place to rent an RV while being just a few hours’ drive from bustling Seattle.

Discover Twisp

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Twisp and make the short drive west to the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, which encompasses more than 60,000 acres of the Stehekin Valley. Lake Chelan extends for 35 miles through the reserve, with passenger ferries from the town of Chelan and floatplanes the only means of access. Aside from spectacular hiking trails, the national recreation area is also home to the Buckner Homestead Historic District and the one-room Stehekin School, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Twisp can also be used as a base for accessing the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, which sprawls along the eastern slopes of the Cascade Range. It's comprised of numerous wilderness areas, including the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness that borders the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area and the North Cascades National Park. The Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness is traversed by more than 190 miles of trails that access the wilderness’ dense forests, meadows, and sparkling alpine lakes.

Slightly northwest of Twisp is the Ross Lake National Recreation Area, which lies just south of the Canada-United States border. It’s the most accessible section of the North Cascades National Park Complex and a major recreational destination, with everything from fishing and hunting to kayaking, hiking, and rock climbing on offer. Get active on one of the three lakes - Ross, Diablo, and Gorge - or along the upper reaches of the Skagit River, then stretch your legs along one of the long-distance trails that connect with the North Cascades National Park and Pasayten Wilderness.

RV Parks

Pick up your motorhome rental in Twisp and head north to the Riverbend RV Park, which lies on the banks of the Methow River on the Cascade Loop Scenic Byway. Aside from their full hookup RV sites, there are also laundry facilities, a 1/2-acre dog park, Wi-Fi, and an on-site convenience store where you can pick up essentials.

Farther north is the Pine Near RV Park & Campground, a small campground just one block from the center of Winthrop. Their pull-through sites have either 20, 30, or 50-amp service, with access to Wi-Fi and a coin-operated laundry.

A 15-minute drive south of Twisp is the Carlton RV Park, which has two entrances for easy access to its wooded RV sites. They offer electric, sewer, and water hookups, with a complimentary breakfast served at the campsite each Sunday by the local church.

You can also make the 45-minute drive east to Omak and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Twisp and head to TwispWorks, a 6.4-acre center for arts and culture in the Methow Valley. It was established in 2009 to revitalize the abandoned Twisp Ranger Station and is now a lively hub filled with artists, craftspeople, and community organizations. Shop for local handicrafts or browse the native plant garden, then attend one of the regular classes and community events that are designed for all ages.

If you’re interested in the local history, visit the Shafer Museum in Winthrop where you can wander through a number of historic buildings that include an old schoolhouse and a general store. Check out the mining display of late-19th-century equipment and get up close to old presses once used by newspapers at the Print Shop. Other buildings include the Ladies’ Shop where old dolls and clothing are exhibited, as well as a log house dating to 1896 that’s known locally as “The Castle.”

Also in Winthrop is the North Cascades Smokejumpers Base, which celebrates the Methow Valley’s reputation as the birthplace of smokejumping. It’s one of several methods used to protect national forest resources from wildfire and also one of the most cost-effective. Join a guided tour of the base during the fire season (June to October) to get a behind-the-scenes look at smokejumping and how it’s utilized to protect the forests of northwest Washington.

Twisp is home to a couple of supermarkets where you can pick up grocery supplies, as well as a handful of restaurants and bakeries for dining out. There are also a couple of gas stations if you need to fill up your camper rental in Twisp.

Whether you’re visiting Okanogan County for its sprawling forests or cultural heritage, book an RV in Twisp and start exploring!
