The small village of Tulelake, California was founded back in the 1930s. This young town is a whole lot newer than many of the nearby towns and cities that were built during the gold rush, and a whole lot smaller too.

Tulelake sits just minutes south of the Oregon-California state line and is absolutely surrounded on nearly all sides by wildlife preserves, national monument land, parks, lakes, and other natural features, making it an incredible place to rent an RV.

When you book an RV in Tulelake, you’ll find yourself in an enviable position, with the freedom and flexibility to venture off to the California coastline to the west, the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east, or the great state of Oregon up north. Redding and Sacramento are two of the closest cities to Tulelake in California. Tulelake has a nice remote feeling, but you are never far from some sort of naturally beautiful area when you vacation in the small, northern California town.

The Great Outdoors

It will be an absolute pleasure to plan your Tulelake camper rental trip and the many places you’ll see because there are just so many spots to choose from. Just outside of town is Tule Lake and Tulelake National Wildlife Refuge, a can’t-miss destination just minutes from Tulelake. This glorious collection of wetlands and grasslands is home to an astonishingly high number of wildlife species, including rare fish and migratory birds. You can learn a lot at this refuge, hike around, take photos, or enjoy dreamy views of faraway Mount Shasta. Speaking of Mount Shasta, this holy mountain is sacred to the Klamath tribes of indigenous people who inhabited northern California and southern Oregon. The volcano is part of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and is the fifth highest mountain in California. The forest has over 400 miles of trails to hike and bike on, five wilderness areas, and massive Lake Shasta, a human-made lake, and dozens of campgrounds for the Tulelake RV rental. Don’t miss out on Lake Shasta Caverns, a breathtaking complex of caves that have recently been named a National Natural Landmark.

Lava Beds National Monument is also quite close to Tulelake, with every imaginable volcanic feature you can think of. Lava tubes, cinder cones, lava fields, and pyroclastic flows can be seen at this impressive monument, as well as an assortment of beautiful plants that grow easily in the nutrient-rich volcanic soil. You can hike on countless different trails weaving through the park, camp at any number of campgrounds in your Tulelake motorhome rental, and see some astounding archaeological sites left behind by Modoc natives centuries ago.

If you feel like dipping into Oregon for a quick jaunt, Crater Lake National Park is one of the most unbelievable sites you will ever lay eyes on. This wonder of the natural world features a deep, clear, alpine lake in the caldera of the extinct volcano, Mount Mazama, which exploded several thousand years ago. This magnificent park has a rim around its caldera, where you can hike, bike, or drive around while you view the lake from different angles. You can even camp here and surround yourself with stunning views when you bring your Tulelake RV rental by owner for an overnight trip.

RV Park

The pickings can be quite slim when you rent an RV in Tulelake and need a place to camp. Butte Valley RV Park is close to the state line, within walking distance of several restaurants and shops in town. There are restrooms, hot showers, cozy cabins, and coin-operated laundry machines for guests.

The fairgrounds in Tulelake has an RV camping area, with monthly, weekly, and overnight options. The campground is a wonderful place to stay during the fair in September, but any time of year, you'll be within walking distance of the center of town.

Eagles Nest RV Park can be found south in the national forest, open all year with access to Lava Beds National Monument. There are hiking paths, spacious campsites, and high-speed internet, and discounts for past and current military personnel and their families.

There are other public campgrounds in the national forest and on monument land, so if you like rustic camping, you’ll easily find a quiet and peaceful place to kick back and relax.

City Attractions

Tulelake is a tiny village, with little more than some homes, a few restaurants, and some shops where you can buy groceries and other essentials. However, there are some interesting historical monuments and museums scattered in and around town that you can visit too.

Tulelake-Butte Valley Museum is the primary source for historical information in town. The museum dives deep into the past, explaining the history of the region, from the ancient native peoples to the settlers who arrived in droves after perilous treks across the country. The museum is full of pioneer items, native artwork and artifacts, and troves of information about the horrible prison and internment camps that were built right outside of town during World War II.

Speaking of internment camps, the Tule Lake National Monument pays homage to this dark chapter in American history, one of nine sites like it in the country. The town was once home to the Tule Lake Segregation Center, a place where Japanese-Americans were deemed disloyal, stripped of their rights, and subjected to awful living conditions in overcrowded camps. The camps have become a symbol for civil rights for all Americans, and there is an informational center describing what went on at these camps during the war.

On a lighter note, the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds plays host to a number of events, most notably the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair held each year in early September. This beloved celebration brings the town and its visitors together for a symphony of fun-filled events, tasty foods, live concerts, and thrilling carnival rides among other things.
