The little community of Townshend is located in Vermont’s southeastern corner, near its border with Massachusetts and New Hampshire. At first glance, it’s doesn’t seem like much more than a rural farming town, but look a bit further, and you’ll see that it also has some amazing attractions like great skiing, fascinating museums, and lovely art galleries. When you get an RV rental in Townshend, VT, you’ll have access to all of these things and more.

Fun Fact: Chevy Chase’s movie Funny Farm was filmed during the summer season in Townshend and all of the trees were painted to look like Vermont’s famed autumn colors - which killed nearly every one of them. The film's producers had to replant the whole lot, leaving the trees looking rather stunted to this day. It just goes to show there’s nothing more desirable than fall in Vermont, even if you have to fake it.

The Great Outdoors

Vermont is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts thanks to the stunning Green Mountains that run along its spine and the beautiful lakes and rivers that flow from them. When getting a travel trailer rental in Townshend, you’ll definitely want to block out a few days to enjoy nature. Townshend State Park is just outside the city limits and has a few campsites, excellent swimming in the West River, and even better fishing if you’ve got the proper state license. However, most visitors just come to enjoy some quiet time next to the water and maybe a picnic lunch.

If you’re coming to rent an RV during the winter months, check out Mt. Snow ski area, a little way down Highway 100, near the town of Dover. It’s not as big as some of Vermont’s more famous ski hills like Stowe and Killington, but it’s the closest big mountain to the Northeast’s most populous towns: Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Albany.

The famed Long Trail also runs through the Green Mountains to the west of Townshend. It’s America’s first long-distance trail, having been built a few years prior to the better-known Appalachian Trail, and stretches from Vermont’s border with Massachusetts all the way up to Canada. Doing a section of the trail is one of the best ways to get some hiking in when you book an RV in Townshend.

RV Parks

Finding an RV park in Vermont can be a bit of challenge; while the state is swimming in great campgrounds, few of them are designed for RV campers. One of the nearby places to camp with your RV rental near Townshend is the Brattleboro North KOA Journey just outside of Brattleboro. It’s a bit of a drive from Townshend, though the amenities might be worth the drive. The KOA offers full hookups, a basketball court, a swimming pool, a dog park, and a small camp store for picking up the essentials. As with many KOAs, there are weekly events where you can meet up with fellow travelers and make new friends. Its location near Brattleboro, one of the larger towns in southern Vermont, makes this a good place to consider if you want access to urban amenities.

Another option that’s a little closer to town when you get a camper rental in Townshend is the West River Camperama. On the beautiful West River, the park offers water and electrical hookups, a swimming pool, a shuffleboard court, and heated restrooms. If you’re thinking about spending most of your time in Townshend proper, this could be a nice place to stay.

If you’d prefer something more rustic for your Townshend motorhome rental, then you can’t beat Jamaica State Park, just a short drive to the north. Sites are fairly basic, but there is a nice walking trail where the West River Railroad used to run.

Exploring the City

Townshend is quite small, and Vermont’s towns are in proximity to each other, so be prepared to take some road trips if you want to see all the attractions this region has to offer. For a taste of the arts, head up to the town of Jamaica, which has a number of interesting galleries including the Elaine Beckwith and Hot Glass Works glassblowing museum.

No trip to Vermont would be complete without sampling the state’s most famous product: maple syrup. To see how it’s made, stop in at Plummer’s Sugar House near the town of Grafton. They have some excellent tours of the processing facilities, and you can learn about the different grades of syrup along with their culinary uses. Most importantly, you can buy a jug of the sweet stuff to enjoy on pancakes back at the park.

If you’re looking for a scenic day trip near Townshend, consider driving the Molly Stark Trail from Brattleboro to Bennington. The route runs for nearly 50 miles through some of southern Vermont’s most beautiful countryside as it traverses a low-lying section of the Green Mountains. If you need to get out and stretch your legs, there are dozens of great hiking trails branching off from the highway.
