Home to historic laboratories that were established in 1897, Swiftwater, Pennsylvania is a small community that forms part of Pocono Township. It all began when a Brooklyn bacteriologist recovering from cholera fell in love with the innkeeper’s daughter at the Swiftwater Inn. The land he inherited adjacent to the inn was used to build his laboratory, which has gone on to be one of the biggest flu vaccine plants in the United States.

With the Swiftwater Creek running along its northern bounds, today Swiftwater is a picturesque place to rent an RV while discovering the sights of Monroe County. It’s within easy access of the heritage-listed Pocono Manor and hiking trails of the Big Pocono State Park, as well as some of the United State’s largest indoor water parks.

Discover Swiftwater

The Great Outdoors

You can book a motorhome rental in Swiftwater and spend a day exploring the Big Pocono State Park, which sprawls across 1,300 acres just to the south of town. There are around seven miles of hiking trails where you can stretch your legs or just enjoy a scenic drive to the summit of Camelback Mountain to soak up the panoramic views across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The park is also home to the Camelback Ski Area that’s popular during the winter months as the largest skiing and snowboarding facility in the region.

Swiftwater is also a good base for visiting the Tannersville Cranberry Bog Preserve, a wildlife-rich area that’s listed as a National Natural Landmark. It’s the southernmost boreal bog east of the Mississippi River and is home to an impressive birdlife, not to mention some of North America’s most beautiful native orchids. Wander along the floating boardwalk to view the preserve’s peat moss and unique plant species while keeping an eye out for otters and coyotes.

If you want to take to the water, head north to the Tobyhanna State Park, which encompasses the Tobyhanna Lake and Tobyhanna Creek. You can rent canoes and rowboats to explore the waterways at your leisure or soak up the lakeside views from the five-mile-long trail around the perimeter. Visiting during the winter months? The park is still a hive of recreational activity with ice skating, snowmobiling, and ice fishing all on offer.

RV Parks

Book an RV rental in Swiftwater and make the short drive south to the Scotrun RV Resort, which is designed around a lake where guests are welcome to fish. This family-friendly RV destination features a swimming pool and mini-golf course, as well as a basketball court that will be a hit with young guests.

Also nearby is the Four Seasons Campground, which is particularly popular with ATV enthusiasts while also offering a swimming pool and well-stocked fishing pond. It encompasses 850 forested acres on the edge of a game reserve and has around 35 miles of groomed trails for ATVers to explore.

Alternatively, drive east to the Cranberry Run Campground whose tranquil RV sites nestle in a wooded setting. There’s an on-site shop where you can pick up basic supplies, as well as an outdoor swimming pool, fishing pond, and game room where you can access the campground’s complimentary Wi-Fi.

You can also head to East Stroudsburg and its Walmart where you may be able to park for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

If you’re interested in the history of the region, pick up your camper rental in Swiftwater and make the short drive north to the Pocono Manor Historic District. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was originally developed by Quakers in the early 20th century, with around 75 buildings that include the historic resort of Pocono Manor. Discover the architectural designs by Philadelphian Walter Smedley, with Shingle, Bungalow, and American Craftsman-style cottages all on show.

Pocono Manor is also home to the Kalahari Water Park, which is one of the largest indoor water parks in North America. It’s home to thrilling water slides and a flow rider where you can test your surfing and body boarding skills, as well as a children’s play area known as Coral Cove. There’s an enticing choice of indoor and outdoor spas where adults can relax, as well as a lazy river ride.

For some retail therapy, make the short drive south to Tannersville and The Crossings Premium Outlets where you’ll find various brand name clothing and footwear stores. The shopping mall also houses a number of restaurants where you can relax over lunch.

Swiftwater is home to a small supermarket where you can shop for groceries and has a good selection of eateries if you don’t want to cook, as well as a couple of gas stations if you want to fill up your travel trailer rental in Swiftwater.
