Known as the county seat for Lassen County in California, Susanville is a small city and self-proclaimed “Hub of Northeastern California.” Susanville was settled in the first half of the 19th century, once named Rooptown after Isaac Roop, one of the region’s first pioneers. The name was later changed to honor Susan, Isaac Roop’s daughter. At one point, Susanville was a large mining and timber harvesting town, before suffering immensely when these industries left town in the 20th century.

Now Susanville is known for being a prison town, with two large prisons that employ half the town’s population. Additionally, by virtue of its location and beautiful surroundings, Susanville is a great place to rent an RV with the intention of seeing some of the region’s gorgeous mountains, national forests, and stunning national parks. When you book an RV in Susanville, the Sierra Nevada Mountains are right at your doorstep in this charming, mountain town. Redding can be found to the west, and Reno, Nevada is an hour's drive south of Susanville, but you won’t be needing much outside entertainment when you find yourself in one of California’s hidden paradises.

The Great Outdoors

Susanville Ranch Park is a great place to start your excursion, as half of the park is located in Susanville itself. The park is owned and maintained by Lassen County, with a network of trails offering opportunities for great hiking and bicycling. Mountain biking is quite popular within the park, as is observing and photographing wildlife.

Lassen National Forest, Plumas National Forest, and Modoc National Forest are just a few of the large wilderness areas close to town that you can visit with your Susanville RV rental. Plumas National Forest has well over a million acres of gorgeous forest and mountain top vistas to seek out, with hundreds of miles of paths and roads to hike or mountain bike. A great deal of the forest consists of old-growth groves that are over a thousand years old. Modoc National Forest is also exceptional, located about an hour's drive north of Susanville. Here you can find tons of large lakefront recreation areas, campgrounds where you can park your Susanville camper rental, and breathtaking natural landmarks like the Lava Beds National Monument. There are lots of magma fields, lava tubes, archaeological sites, and other fascinating places located within the forest and monument.

Lassen National Forest and Lassen Volcanic National Park are both quite close to town, presenting visitors to Susanville with one of the area’s most unimaginable impressive natural wonders. The forest has three wilderness, and dozens of campgrounds for outdoor enthusiasts to make use of. Together, these two federally owned lands combine to make up nearly one and a half million acres of paradise, with a large chunk of the famous Pacific Crest Trail passing through the park. Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of the only places in the world where you can see all four major types of volcanoes, with some active and some extinct cinder cones and stratovolcanoes peppered in. Rock climbing and mountain hiking to the peak of Mount Lassen are fun ways to enjoy the park for those with experience and good stamina.

RV Parks

RV parks and campgrounds are never too tricky to find where ever you may be in California. Eagle Lake RV Park is one of the closest options when you have a campervan rental in Susanville. The park is on the shores of Eagle Lake, with ample space to swim, boat, or fish. There are cozy cabins and restroom facilities on site.

Susanville RV Park is another place to consider when you arrive in Susanville. The park has all the usual features like laundry facilities, restrooms, hot showers, and wireless internet, and a fitness center too.

Lake Cove Resort & Marina is only open in the summertime, but well worth a visit if you happen to need a place to stay. The best part about this camping area is the wide-open space for swimming and fishing on the lake, as well as the large marina where guests may park their boats and other watercraft.

City Attractions

Don't expect an epic city setting with big-city sites when you book a motorhome rental in Susanville. It may be one of the largest cities in northeastern California, but it pales in comparison to cities like Sacramento and San Francisco. That being said, you will find some neat surprises like the Sierra Theater in the heart of town. This beautiful, historic, art-deco style movie theater has been revitalized and restored to continue its streak of excellence serving the town. This small, intimate theater has a few screens that play modern movies, so you don’t have to worry about missing your favorite upcoming movie while you are on vacation.

The casino in town is one of the places to enjoy some nightlife, with large gaming floors for blackjack, craps, roulette, poker, and slot machines. Additionally, there are restaurants and live entertainment options, as well as an adjoining hotel making for a complete experience.

One of the best museums to visit in town is definitely the Lassen Historical Museum, a fantastic institution full of secrets, old photographs, antique furniture, artifacts, and engaging exhibits. This small but informative museum has details about the Sage Brush Wars, the first mining settlements, the local native peoples, and much more. The farther out you drive, you might discover some other local attractions, but the natural areas near Susanville are far and away the star of the show.
