Situated on the east bank of the Susquehanna River near the confluence of its north and west branches, Sunbury is a historic city that was first settled by Shawnee migrants. It grew into one of the largest and most influential Native American Indian settlements during the early 18th century when it was known as Shamokin.

In 1772, Shamokin was renamed Sunbury after a town just outside of London, and it was here that Thomas Edison installed the first successful three-wire electric lighting system in 1883. The building in question was renamed the Edison Hotel during Sunbury's 150th anniversary in 1922 and is said to be haunted by a spirit named Ramona.

With its riverside setting and historic streets, Sunbury is a picturesque place to rent an RV while exploring Northumberland County. It’s within easy access of family-friendly campgrounds, not to mention a handful of state parks that are brimming with recreational pursuits.

Discover Sunbury

The Great Outdoors

Book a camper rental in Sunbury and make the short drive across the Susquehanna River to the Shikellamy State Park’s Overlook Section. Soak up the elevated views of the confluence of the west and north branches of the Susquehanna River while keeping an eye out for the breeding pair of peregrine falcons that have established their nest here. A one-mile-long nature trail leads through this section of the Shikellamy State Park, with sightings of songbirds and white-tailed deer common.

A short drive west of Sunbury lies the Bald Eagle State Forest, a 193,424-acre protected area of forested ridges, lush valleys, and meandering streams. It was created following the heavy logging that took place in Pennsylvania during the mid-to-late 19th century, as well as the destruction caused by steam locomotives igniting wildfires. It’s comprised of numerous different areas, including the Poe Valley State Park, the White Mountain Wild Area, and the Snyder Middleswarth Natural Area where you can go hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing.

The Bald Eagle State Forest lies adjacent to the Rothrock State Forest, which is traversed by around 300 miles of multi-use trails. Follow part of the 326-mile-long Pennsylvania Mid State Trail or head to the Shingletown Gap and Coopers Gap areas that are renowned for their mountain biking trails. Old-growth Eastern white pines and Eastern hemlocks cluster in the Alan Seeger Natural Area while the Detweiler Run Natural Area is ignited with rhododendrons during the warmer months.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Sunbury and head to the Fantasy Island Campground, which offers around 100 RV sites on the banks of the Susquehanna River. There’s an in-ground swimming pool and also a nine-hole miniature golf course, as well as a children’s playground and a gaming arcade that will keep young visitors entertained.

Another nearby option is the Penn Avon Campground in Selinsgrove, a pet-friendly RV destination with electricity, water, sewer, and cable TV connections. There’s also a children’s playground, and Wi-Fi is available at the property.

Drive north from Sunbury, and you’ll arrive at the Splash Magic Campground, which lies adjacent to its very own waterpark. There’s a camp store where you can pick up essentials and a laundry room, as well as a certified mechanic on-site in case you have any issues.

There is a Walmart in nearby Selinsgrove where you may be able to set up camp for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Sunbury and head to Fort Augusta, which was built by the British in 1756 to ward off attacks from the French and Native Americans. Today it houses the Hunter House Museum, which exhibits artifacts from the period, such as an original powder magazine from Fort Augusta and the uniform of a 13-year-old drummer boy who died during the Civil War. Hear the story of Captain Samuel Hunter who owned the historic residence and see the one-sixth model of Fort Augusta on the grassy lawns outside.

If you’re traveling with kids, make a point of visiting the Children’s Museum in Bloomsburg, which lies around 35 minutes’ drive to the north. It features a replica coal mine from the Shikellamy Marina and exhibits exploring the life of Pennsylvania Indians, as well as an Ancient Egyptian-themed area and hands-on arts and crafts.

Kids will also love the amusement park in nearby Elysburg, which features more than 50 rides that include rollercoasters, a carousel, and a haunted coal mine. If you’re visiting during the summer months, there’s also a water-themed play area with pools and slides. Alternatively, head west to the reptile zoo in Allenwood where you can get up close to friendly geckos, lizards, and turtles.

Sunbury has a couple of supermarkets where you can purchase groceries, along with a handful of fast food restaurants and cafes if you prefer to dine out. There are also gas stations if you need to fill up your campervan rental in Sunbury.
