Sturgis is a city in St. Joseph County, Michigan, and is located very near the Michigan-Indiana state border. It was settled as early as 1827 but didn't officially become recognized as a city until 1896. An urban myth suggests that the town was named after a resident who baked biscuits for a surveying party laying out the city limits; one member of that party would later become state governor (his name was Lewis Cass). Sturgis has a sister city, Weisloch, Germany, and began the relationship in 1966 as a part of the People-to-People program initiated by President Eisenhower. Since then it has exchanged community choirs, students, and even teachers. The two cities celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2016.

Book an RV in St. Joseph County and you can choose from a wide variety of RV makes and models uniquely suited to your vacation needs. While you are here, you should consider exploring some other nearby towns and cities. White Pigeon has the oldest surviving U.S. Land office in the state. Jones' first two settlers, John Bair and Daniel Driskel, had lakes named after them. Mendon celebrates the annual Mendon Riverfest at Reed River Park the third week of each August for three days. Battle Creek's economy is largely invested in food science training and businesses. Coldwater has one of the oldest theaters in Michigan, The Tibbits Opera House, built in 1882. Your Sturgis travel trailer rental is how you will see and experience this area in style and comfort.

The Great Outdoors

Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary is an animal rescue facility that rescues and rehabilitates abandoned and injured alligators as well as tortoises, snakes, and other amphibians. Visitors can participate in feeding the sanctuary's resident wildlife and take night tours which are highly informational. Staff have trained some of the alligators to respond by name.

Fort Custer State Recreation Area was a U.S. Military training center during World War II but is now an outdoor recreation site where visitors can hike or bike the park trails, go boating or fishing on Eagle Lake (located on the edge of the park), or suntan on the lake's beach. The trails mostly consist of packed sandy soil with some being paved and are color-coded for bikers according to difficulty. Keep your Sturgis RV rental nearby, and you can combine scenic outdoor activities with all the creature comforts of home.

Al Sabo Land Preserve was developed in the early 1970s in an effort to protect local groundwater resources from urban development. It is open to the public for hiking and mountain biking, although the area had to be closed in 1992 due to mountain biking activity leading to severe erosion. Biking is limited to clearly marked trails as a result of this earlier event. The area consists of wetlands, open meadows, and a mix of coniferous trees and hardwoods.
