Founded in 1856, Stephenville serves as the seat of Erath County in the very heart of Texas and is one of the numerous communities in the United States that have dubbed themselves the “Cowboy Capital of the World.” It was incorporated in 1889 following the arrival of the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway, with many of the buildings around the town square dating from this period.

Stephenville is positioned on the doorstep of the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and the Dinosaur Valley State Park, making it an ideal place for families to rent an RV. It’s conveniently situated just a couple of hours’ drive from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and slightly farther from Austin.

Discover Stephenville

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Stephenville and drive east to the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, a wildlife conservation center near Glen Rose that’s home to more than 1,000 animals. Embark on the 9.5-mile-long driving tour to get up close to their 50 different species that include American bison, gemsbok, giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and black rhinoceros. Learn about their role in the research and rehabilitation of scimitar-horned oryx and Attwater’s prairie chicken, as well as operating one of the most successful cheetah breeding programs in the world.

If you’re traveling with kids, make a point of visiting the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center-Children's Animal Center, which is located halfway along the Gosdin Scenic Drive. Here they can interact with friendly Nigerian dwarf goats and curious emus, as well as the park’s 120-pound African spurred tortoise. The Children’s Animal Center is also home to chatty bare-eyed cockatoos, colorful macaws, and a very cute pot-bellied pig.

A short drive north lies the Dinosaur Valley State Park where you can walk in the footprints of dinosaurs along the Paluxy River bed. There are around 20 miles of trails traversing the park, with the option to explore on foot or horseback. If you don’t have your own horse, you can participate in a tour run by one of the local companies that offer guided horseback riding and horse-drawn wagon rides through this prehistoric landscape.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Stephenville and pull into one of the sites at the Getaway Campground and RV Park, which is situated on the southeastern edge of the city center. This small campground has just 10 RV sites nestled beneath shady oak trees, as well as enclosed RV and boat storage units available.

Another nearby option is the Lost Creek RV Park, a pet-friendly park that has 38 pull-through RV sites and 11 back-in sites to select from. All offer 20, 30 or 50 amp service and Wi-Fi, with a laundry room where you can catch up on your washing.

If you love horses, consider booking a spot at the Hoof Prints Ranch, an RV park and horse motel that caters to big rigs. There are 13 RV sites with full hookups and 30 or 50 amp power service, as well as a laundry room with two washers and two dryers.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Stephenville and head to the Stephenville Historical House Museum to gain an insight into the people and events that have shaped the city. It comprises numerous structures that are displayed in a grassy field behind Berry Cottage, a pitched roof structure that is the oldest home in Stephenville. If you’re visiting during the summer months, you can cool off at the local water park with pools, slides, and fountains. Or, make the short drive northeast to Granbury City Beach, which is located in the heart of town overlooking Lake Granbury. There are a splash park and thatched roof pavilions where you can escape from the heat, as well as kayak, paddle board, and tube rentals during the season.

Another popular family-friendly destination is Jaycee City Park in the northwestern corner of Stephenville. There’s a children’s playground where the kids can run free and also numerous walking trails if you want to stretch your legs.
