Named for the splendor of its trees, Splendora is a small town in Texas’ Montgomery County. It’s located on what was originally known as “Cox’s Switch,” a narrow-gauge spur suggested by Charles Cox on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway, with a general store built by W.W. Burrow in 1883.

Today, Splendora is a laid-back community on the road between Livingston and Houston, making it an ideal place to rent an RV. It’s within easy access of wildlife reserves and the immense Sam Houston National Forest, not to mention the iconic Mission Control of the Space Center Houston.

Discover Splendora

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Splendora and head south to the Lake Houston Wilderness Park, which encompasses almost 5,000 acres of wooded parklands. Stretch your legs on the 20 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails or go horseback riding on one of the equestrian trails. The park features creeks that can be explored by kayak and has a nature center where you can learn about the local ecology.

Or, you can drive north into the vast Sam Houston National Forest, which is traversed by the 128-mile-long Lone Star Hiking Trail. It’s the longest continuously marked and maintained footpath in Texas and is ideal for both short and long hikes, with three different sections to explore. You can also enjoy boating on both Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston, with year-round fishing available.

If you want to spot the local wildlife, head east to the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 30,000 acres of bottomland hardwood forest along the banks of the Trinity River. It’s a vital habitat for numerous migratory and resident birds, including waterfowl and neotropical songbirds that flock to the forested swamps and wet pastures. White-tailed deer, coyotes, and bobcats also call the refuge home, together with around 900 different types of butterflies and moths.

RV Parks

Book a motorhome rental in Splendora and drive west to the Reserve at Lake Conroe, which lies on the shores of a sparkling lake. It features numerous recreational facilities, such as tennis courts and a swimming pool, as well as having a boat ramp for a range of water sports and fishing.

Or, head north to the Woodsy Hollow Campground & RV Resort, which offers both 30 and 50-amp sites in a heavily wooded setting. There’s Wi-Fi access available and a swimming pool where you can cool off during the hot summer months, as well as a playground and private fishing lake.

Another nearby option is the Double Lake Recreation Area, which is named after the 34-acre lake that lies adjacent. Aside from its basic RV sites and camping facilities, there are fishing piers, a sandy beach where you can swim and boat rentals if you want to get out and about on the lake waters.

In nearby Cleveland, there is a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near Splendora and drive north to learn about the local history at the Cleveland Historical Museum, which is situated inside the old City Hall building. Photographs and artifacts detail the people and events that have shaped the city, with the Cleveland Fire Station located right next door. The Cleveland Historical Museum is just 10 minutes’ walk from the Old City Park where young visitors can let off some steam on the play equipment.

After exploring the museum, take time to admire the Strake-Gray Oilfield House that was relocated to Candy Cane Park from nearby Duffy Lane and the Strake-Gray Roughneck Bunkhouse that was used by employees from the Strake Oil Company.

Splendora makes a good base for visiting Houston, which lies around 35 minutes’ drive to the south and is home to the Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston.
