Along the shore of East Okoboji Lake, Spirit Lake is a small town in the Iowa Great Lakes region, about 100 miles east of Sioux Falls, SD and 100 miles southwest of Mankato, MN. It was originally known by the Dakota Sioux as “The Lake of the Spirit” before a settlement was established by three brothers here in 1856.

Today, Spirit Lake is renowned as an angler’s paradise, with lakes on all sides that are well stocked with fish. There are plenty of campgrounds where you can base yourself if you want to rent an RV and explore the recreational pursuits and cultural sights of the region.

Discover Spirit Lake

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Spirit Lake and head to the Elinor Bedell State Park, which hugs the east shore of East Okoboji Lake and was gifted by U.S. Congressman Berkley Bedell and his wife, Elinor. It encompasses prairie, wetland, and oak savanna habitats that are traversed by several miles of hiking trails. Birdwatchers can utilize the wildlife-viewing blind situated just off one of the trails while anglers can try their luck at luring white bass, walleye, perch, and catfish.

Also nearby is the Pikes Point State Park, which occupies a small peninsula projecting into West Okoboji Lake. There's a children’s playground and also a swimming beach that make it popular with families, as well as a picnic shelter that’s been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This rustic-style structure was built in the 1930s of rubble stone and is considered significant in the way that it blends into the natural environment.

Spirit Lake lies between West Okoboji and East Okoboji Lakes, both of which are renowned as fine fishing destinations. Yellow perch, bluegill, and walleye are all regularly caught here, together with smallmouth bass, crappie, and northern pike. Aside from fishing, you can get active while water skiing and sailing or kick back on one of the numerous swimming beaches that line the lakes’ shores.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Spirit Lake and head to the Cenla RV Park, which overlooks the scenic waters of Center Lake. There are more than 150 RV sites to select from with full hookups, cable TV, and complimentary Wi-Fi, as well as a swimming pool, recreation courts, and a fishing dock.

A 15-minute drive south from Spirit Lake takes you to the Fieldstone RV Park in Arnolds Park, which has 200 deluxe campsites with full hookups. There’s a laundry room with washers and dryers, as well as a kitchen clubhouse and complimentary Wi-Fi available throughout the park.

Also nearby is the Marble Beach State Recreation Area, which has both rustic and electrical hookup sites. Restroom and shower facilities are on-site, and there are a variety of water-related activities to enjoy here, including canoeing and kayaking, boating, fishing, and swimming.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Spirit Lake and make the short drive south to Okoboji’s Higgins Museum of National Bank Notes. It was founded by William R. Higgins, Jr. in 1978 and showcases a range of historic bank notes from Iowa, Minnesota, and Missouri. See a vintage bank teller cage and antique safes, as well as a spider printing press that’s on loan to the museum from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C.

Another place where you can get your cultural fix is at the Pearson Lakes Art Center, which provides a hub for artistic, musical, and theatrical performances throughout the year. Check to see what’s currently showing in the center’s six galleries or get hands-on during one of the regularly scheduled art workshops. There’s an interactive art gallery known as ArtSMART that’s ideal for young visitors, as well as the Little Red Gift Gallery where you can pick up souvenirs.

Traveling with kids? Head to the indoor waterpark near Arnolds Park where they can get active, no matter what the weather’s like outside. There are various slides designed for all ages and a lazy river, as well as a pirate ship playground complete with water cannons. Young guests will love the Lil’ Squirt play area while adults can relax in the giant indoor whirlpool.

Spirit Lake is home to numerous supermarkets where you can pick up groceries, as well as a handful of eateries if you want to dine out. There are also a couple of gas stations if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Spirit Lake.

Whether you’re visiting Dickinson County for its family-friendly attractions or fishing lakes, book an RV in Spirit Lake and start planning your Iowa adventure.
