With the Calfkiller River flowing through its heart, Sparta serves as the seat of White County in the heart of Tennessee. It was established in 1809 and named after the ancient Greek city-state, with the city losing out to Nashville by only one vote when the state capital was chosen.

Today, Sparta is clustered with landmarks that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places while being within easy access of scenic wilderness areas. Its fine choice of RV campgrounds and proximity to both Nashville and Chattanooga make it an ideal place to rent an RV.

Discover Sparta

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Sparta and make the short drive southwest to Rock Island State Park, which sprawls across more than 800 acres at the confluence of the Caney Fork, Collins, and Rock Rivers. This ruggedly beautiful park encompasses the Caney Fork Gorge and its cascading waterfalls, as well as some of the most scenic overlooks along the Eastern Highland Rim. Witness the series of plunges and cascades that are known as the Great Falls and discover the history of the region at the heritage-listed Falls City Cotton Mill.

To the northwest of Sparta is the Edgar Evins State Park, which encompasses 6,000 acres along the shores of Center Hill Lake and is a hub for water-based activities. There’s a full-service dock and marina where you can get out on the water, as well as plenty of hiking trails for discovering the Eastern Highland Rim. Learn about the former resident Alexander Dunham along the short Dunham Cemetery Trail or explore the rock wall ruins of the early-20th-century homesteads along the Millennium Trail.

Sparta can also be used as a base for visiting Fall Creek Falls State Park, which is named after the 256-foot Fall Creek Falls. It centers around the upper Cane Creek Gorge that’s peppered with numerous other waterfalls that can be accessed along a network of hiking trails. Trek to the photogenic Rockhouse Falls or witness the highest free-fall waterfall east of the Mississippi River, then take in the sweeping views from the Cane Creek Gorge Overlook.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Sparta and head to Big Puckett’s Campground, which offers a diverse range of RV sites with both partial and full hookups. It’s pet-friendly and has an on-site dog park, as well as a general store and regular live music performances at its restaurant.

A short drive to the west of Sparta is the Ragland Bottom Campground, which is situated on the shores of Center Hill Lake along the Caney Fork River. There are 40 sites with water and electric hookups available, as well as a boat ramp, recreation courts, and a children’s playground.

Or, head south to the Mountain Glen RV Park & Campground in Pikeville where you’ll find 41 RV sites with 20, 30 and 50 amp service hookups. There are picnic tables, fire rings, and an on-site laundry facility, as well as a general store where you can pick up camping essentials.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Sparta and make the short drive north to the Bon Air Mountain Historical Society Museum, which preserves the local history of Bon Air. This bustling resort town flourished following the construction of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway, attracting tourists wanting to breathe in the fresh mountain air. Learn about the coal mines that prospered in the area at the DeRossett Railroad Section House Museum, which was built in 1904 to house workers building the railroad.

If you’re particularly interested in the coal mining history of Tennessee, make a day trip south to Dunlap to visit the Coke Oven Museum, which preserves the remnants of an early-20th-century coke production facility. Its five batteries and 268 beehive ovens are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and there’s a replica coal mine that visitors can explore. Admire the vintage coal mining machinery on display, including a 1906 coal washer, then walk to the top of Fredonia Mountain where the former mining site was located.

Sparta makes a good base for visiting Nashville, which is located around 90 minutes’ drive to the west and home to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Learn about the life of legendary singer Johnny Cash at the museum dedicated to his legacy or catch a live country music performance at the Grand Ole Opry. If you’re traveling with kids, be sure to spend an afternoon at the Adventure Science Center where they can get behind the controls of a flight simulator and learn what it really takes to become an astronaut.

Sparta is home to a couple of grocery stores where you can shop for groceries, as well as a good selection of eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you want to fill up your campervan rental in Sparta.

Whether you’re visiting White County for its hiking trails or to discover its coal mining heritage, book an RV in Sparta and start exploring.
