Vermont’s most populous city, Burlington, is bordered to the south by South Burlington, a vital addition to the metro area. South Burlington is known for a variety of reasons, like for being home to the state’s largest mall and airport, and the headquarters for the Ben & Jerry’s company.

South Burlington was granted by the Province of New Hampshire along with Burlington, but when the latter became an incorporated city in 1865, the remaining territory became its own distinct town. Although they are separate entities, both South Burlington and Burlington function in a similar manner, with forward-thinking renewable energy strategies and a passion for arts and culture. South Burlington encompasses Interstate 89, making it easy to get around town and providing easy access to places like Montpelier, the state capital, and Boston in Massachusetts. When you book an RV in South Burlington, you will have quick access to many of the state’s wonderful parks, as well as the shores of Lake Champlain, another feature the town shares with the neighboring city to the north.

Discover South Burlington

The Great Outdoors

Despite its small size, you would be hard pressed to find a more ideal state than Vermont to explore when you rent an RV. South Burlington, in particular, lies in a gorgeous part of the state, with tons of small city and state parks lining the shores of Lake Champlain. Kingsland Bay State Park can be found by driving your South Burlington camper rental 20 miles to the south. This lakeside oasis has pleasant beaches lining Lake Champlain, fishing areas, a snack bar, boat rentals, picnic areas, and hiking paths too.

Mount Philo State Park is closer to town but much smaller than Kingsland Bay State Park. The park has camping areas you can use when you bring your South Burlington motorhome rental for a visit, along with hiking trails that carry guests to the top of Mount Philo itself. Atop the small mountain, you can take notice of amazing views of the Adirondack Mountains to the west, and the Green Mountains to the east.

If you head east from town, you will stumble upon Camel's Hump State Park, one of the state’s largest and most wonderful nature areas. The Camel’s Hump is a mountain that lends its name to the park, with lofty viewpoints and some stellar hiking. Once you reach the 4,000-foot-high summit, you can photograph or observe the ocean of fiery fall foliage when summer has ended, and winter is right around the corner. People come from all over to see Camel’s Hump, as it is one of the most iconic landmarks in the state, even featured on the Vermont quarter.

If you want to see the largest nature area in the state, Green Mountain National Forest is an epic place to visit with your South Burlington motorhome rental. There are eight wilderness areas and around 400,000 acres in this massive park, along with miles of hiking trails, mountaintop climbs, and campgrounds to accommodate you. Snowboarders and skiers will be delighted to know that there are a few places to hit the slopes within the park during the winter.

It's easy to find a place to camp with the RV rental near South Burlington, VT. There is an assortment of camping areas nearby, like Shelburne Camping Area just outside of town. This spot has camping for tent campers and RV campers, two pools, a playground, and a restaurant for guests.

River’s Edge Cottages & RV Park is located on the water with its own marina where boats can be kept. There are quaint cottages for rent, fishing charters, an event pavilion, and a pool too.

Apple Island Resort is located north of town on one of Lake Champlain’s islands. This high-end vacation spot has a pool, a golf course, a fitness center, a marina, a general store, and countless other features to keep you happy while you stay.

City Attractions

While not as big or full of attractions as the neighboring city of Burlington, South Burlington has its fair share of entertainment options. The University Mall is a vibrant place to spend some time while looking for great deals. The mall is one of the largest of its kind in the state, full of retail shops, gourmet restaurants, and other well-known brands.

The Robert Hull Fleming Museum of Art and the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Burlington are amazing cultural institutions worth checking out if you enjoy observing world-class art or listening to fantastic live music. It is no secret that Burlington and South Burlington have a great music scene, and Flynn Center for the Performing Arts is one of the liveliest spots to catch some of the country’s top bands. This small, intimate theater is contained in an old Art Deco style theater that was originally built for film screenings. The Robert Hull Fleming Museum of Art houses a collection of art from local artists, and the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe.

There are several companies that call South Burlington home, and several breweries too. South Burlington's most famous resident, however, is the headquarters for Ben and Jerry’s, an internationally recognized ice cream brand that started in an old gas station back in 1978. There is an exceptional tour offered at the factory, and there are RV parking spaces for those traveling with recreational vehicles.
