Discover South Bay

The Great Outdoors

South Bay is just south of Lake Okeechobee, Florida’s largest freshwater lake. Covering about 730 square miles, Lake Okeechobee is the perfect place to get some reprieve from the Florida sun. Spend the day out on the water fishing, boating, and enjoying a variety of water sports. If you prefer to stay dry, there are miles of paved and unpaved nature trails surrounding Lake Okeechobee.

Another place to explore when you rent a motorhome in South Bay is the Everglades. Synonymous with Florida, the Everglades is the most extensive subtropical wilderness in the United States. Though the actual Everglades National Park is all the way down at Florida’s southernmost tip near Homestead, Everglades wildlife management areas are just a few miles south of South Bay. The area is home to a variety of plants and animals including manatees, American crocodiles, and the Florida panther.

South Bay is one of the preferred fishing areas for Floridians, and parks like John Stretch Memorial Park allow visitors and residents easy access to the water. The park covers approximately 56 acres and features a playground, basketball court, several picnic shelters, and a multipurpose field. The park has a boat ramp for accessing Lake Okeechobee and is also the location of the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail.

RV Parks

Looking for a place to park your motorhome rental in South Bay? Consider a stay at South Bay RV Park. Planted at the base of the levee on Lake Okeechobee’s southeast shores, the area around the park is home to a variety of native plants and endangered animal species. If you own a boat, the boat ramp across the street provides easy access to Lake Okeechobee. Rent an RV and make yourself at home at one of the 72 paved RV sites. Each site is outfitted with a grill, picnic table, and full hookups including 30 and 50 amp electrical service. Guests to the campground also have access to two large communal fire pits and two comfort stations with hot showers, a restroom, and coin laundry facilities. For your entertainment, the campground has a basketball and shuffleboard court, and a playground for the little ones.

Another option in the area is Big Cypress RV Resort in Clewiston. About 45 miles outside of South Bay, this pet-friendly RV park offers multiple paved RV sites with full hookups including 20/30/50 amp electrical service. Have a picnic at one of the picnic pavilions, and if you forget something, you can pick it up at the on-site general store. Other amenities include a heated pool, exercise machines, laundry facilities, and a clubhouse. There are shuffleboard, basketball, and bocce ball courts for your leisure.

Exploring the City

Because of its location on the intersection of two major highways, South Bay calls itself the “The Crossroads of Florida.” You’d think, then, that there would be some significant development in South Bay, but there’s not much to do in this agricultural town. Nevertheless, you won’t run out of things to do when you book an RV in Palm Beach County. One option within Palm Beach County is Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. The museum hosts various exhibits consisting of Japanese art and artifacts. The museum also houses a library with more than 7,000 books all related to Japanese topics. The gardens at Morikami, named the Garden of the Drops of Dew, allow you to sit and relax while soaking in the surrounding earth, sky, and water. Though not exact replicas, the six gardens at Morikami were all inspired by famous Japanese gardens.

Something a bit closer to South Bay is Glades Pioneer Park in Belle Glade. The park covers over 64 acres and has something for just about everybody. Wanting to partake in some sports? Glades Pioneer Park has four basketball courts, two softball fields, a baseball field, two sand volleyball courts, and two tennis courts. In the mood for a family outing? Spend time on one of the two playgrounds and then have lunch in one of the picnic shelters. The park also has a 25-yard pool with water slides, a learn-to-swim area, and play features such as tipping buckets. There’s also a nature trail with exercise stations for those seeking a quick workout.

About an hour's drive outside of South Bay but still within Palm Beach County, thrill seekers who book an RV rental near South Bay should make a pit stop at the waterpark near Riviera Beach. This outdoor theme park features an assortment of water slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river. If you’re traveling with little ones, you'll appreciate the area with slides and attractions for children and toddlers. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a bite to eat at one of the eateries within the park.
