Solon, Ohio, is a city in Cuyahoga County and a suburb of Cleveland; but don’t make the mistake of thinking that its metropolitan nature means it lacks options for outdoor recreation. Money magazine included Solon on its “Best Places to Live” list three times (2009, 2011 and 2015). Maybe it’s time you explored this lesser-known gem for yourself.

The area Solon resides upon was first settled in 1820 and was named after one of the first settlers' sons, Lorenzo Solon Bull. Settlement and agriculture were complicated by nearby wetlands and the difficulty of draining them, but the problems were eventually solved and Solon Township developed an economy based on corn, wheat crops and dairy farms. The establishment of the Cleveland-Youngstown rail line, passing through Solon, helped the community's growth. Renting a travel trailer rental in Solon puts you in the driver’s seat for exploring this historic area.

Today, Solon has concentrated its districts into three separate areas, industrial, commercial and residential, including nearly 700 acres of city parks and recreational areas, and three golf courses. Search for an RV in Solon and you will have an ever-changing view of the magnificent nature in Ohio. Other nearby cities of interest are Cleveland, Ashtabula, Warren, Akron and Ashland.

The Great Outdoors

South Chagrin Reservation offers biking, hiking and swimming; its natural and paved trails wind through the forest and near the park rivers. There is also a polo ground, places to stop for a picnic, waterfalls and a sulfur spring. Water shoes are recommended for swimming; keep your RV rental from Solon close by to clean off when your swim is done.

Liberty Park is more cultivated but still offers some interesting outdoor activities, such as a picnic shelter (in case the rain tries to spoil your fun), a playground, and a dog-friendly area. You’ll also find hiking and biking trails that lead to a cave. It has several baseball diamonds and soccer pitches where you can join others for an impromptu game, whichever one you choose. The visitors center has displays and staff to answer questions, and frequent free events open to the public.

RV Parks

You won’t find many RV parks within the city itself, but a short drive in your Solon RV rental should be all you need to find a place to stay.
