Records show there were settlers in Shrewsbury, PA as early as 1790s. The name, Shrewsbury, is a Anglicization of a German word, “Strasbourg,” which means “the town by the street.” Indeed, the town was formed on the side of what would become Highway 83. Today, the city is best known for its historic homes. Around 150 homes are on the National Register of Historic Places, and there are log-cabin homes dating back to late 1700s still standing.
The closest large town is York, about 15 miles to the north. Further to north, you will find Harrisburg about 45 miles away. Gettysburg is about 40 miles west, and Baltimore, Maryland is a little over 40 miles south.
Although this part of Pennsylvania is mostly devoted to farming, there are plenty of parks for recreational outdoor activities. People flock to the small lake for scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, and fishing. Fishermen will enjoy finding largemouth bass, yellow perch, crappie, muskellunge, catfish, northern pike, bluegill, and a few other uncommon species. This park also features a 54-hole disc golf course and a small swimming pool to help you keep cool. Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice skating and fishing, and ice sailing are popular in the winter. Small-game hunting is permitted, though with limitations.
Susquehannock State Park is on a wooded plateau, overlooking the Susquehannock River. There are a few miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, passing through meadows and wooded areas. A few miles past the Pennsylvania-Maryland border, Gunpowder Falls State Park is another excellent park for outdoor recreational activities. It offers over 120 miles of multi-use trails that wind through protected wilderness, and there are historic sites along the way. Fishing, kayaking, canoeing, a swimming beach, and a marina are other amenities offered here. As the name suggests, there’s a small waterfall as well, ideal for great family photos!
