Shiro was formed as a railroad town at the beginning of the 20th century for the Burlington and Rock Island line. In its early days, Shiro was a transport hub for cattle and cotton being shipped to larger cities nearby but has declined in population since the 1950s. Most visitors today are simply taking a break on their way from the city of College Station to more easterly points like Houston’s northern suburbs and the recreational opportunities of Lake Conroe.

When you book an RV in Shiro, it’s important to remember that it’s not about seeing loads of attractions or dining at the finest restaurants, but rather experiencing life in rural Texas. Much of the area looks the way it did a century ago, so it won’t be hard to imagine what the massive cattle drives coming through here so long ago looked like.

The Great Outdoors

Texas is one of the best states to visit if you love the outdoors as there are so many different ecosystems contained in one place. When you get a travel trailer rental in Shiro, one of the most popular places to enjoy nature is Lake Conroe. This 21,000-acre lake sees a lot of boat traffic during the summer months, both for its excellent fishing opportunities and open spaces for jet skiing and speed boating. The best spots for anglers are in the narrow fingers branching off the main channel, particularly on the northern end of the lake. Boat rentals are available in Houston and College Park to help you get out on the water.

If you don’t feel like renting a boat, another great option is Huntsville State Park, which is centered on a much smaller fishing pond. The beautiful woods surrounding the pond are laced with hiking trails that are also popular for horseback riding. If you want to get off the pond’s shore, paddleboat rentals are available too.

Some of the best hiking in the area can be found in the Sam Houston National Forest outside the town of New Waverly. Here you’ll find the 128-mile-long Lone Star Trail, with a 40-mile portion of it lying near Lake Conroe. On this route, you’ll have shiny aluminum markers to keep you on the right path, but there are a number of other trails that will require a map and compass to navigate properly.

RV Parks

The wide-open roads of Texas are always a favorite among RV travelers, so it should come as no surprise that there are a number of fantastic places to stay when you rent an RV here. Most are located near College Park, including one of the closest options, Karstens RV Resort. They have full hookups for your RV rental from Shiro along with a playground, a dog park, and a game room. It’s also far enough off the main road that you shouldn’t have to worry about excess noise from the highway.

Another solid option is the Lazy G RV Park to the south of College Park on Highway 6. Amenities are a bit lighter here, but still include full hookups, laundry facilities, and showers. However, most visitors choose this park for its easy access from the highway.

Rustic camping for your motorhome rental near Shiro can be found in the forests north of Lake Conroe, just a short drive from town. Kelly’s Pond Campground is a Forest Service administered campground not far from the lake that offers no hookups and nearly no amenities. However, if you prefer to spend your time in nature, taking a break from modern conveniences, this might be the place for you when you choose a camper rental in Shiro, TX.

Exploring the City

For a slightly macabre museum experience, make a stop at the Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville. The tour includes such favorites as a Bonnie and Clyde exhibit and an electric chair named Ol’ Sparky. If you’re at all squeamish, this might not be the place for you, as the museum pulls no punches when describing the horrors of the Texas Prison system in the early 20th century.

Another must-see museum in Huntsville is the H.E.A.R.T.S. (Helping Every American Remember Through Service) Veterans Museum of Texas. Each branch of the service has a different room filled with moving exhibits extolling the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. Many families who have lost someone have submitted possessions to give a human face to those sacrifices. The Museum of the American GI in nearby College Station is another great place to learn about Texas’s contribution to the U.S. military and honor America’s servicemen and women.

If you’re a fan of vintage cars though, be sure to stop by the Old Iron Works in Montgomery, which has a decent collection of vehicles from the 1920s and 30s. A few of these can be found in the front showroom, but the majority are a work in progress, being restored to their original beauty in the back garage.
