Sheridan is a small city in northern Wyoming. Named for General Philip Sheridan, a Union strategist during the Civil War, Sheridan is a peaceful, pleasant community located on Interstate 90 between Casper and Billings in Montana. Sheridan is county seat to Sheridan County, containing all the government buildings as well as numerous historical sites dating back to the Old West days.
Sheridan has always been a frontier town, blessed with great beauty and a strong economy rooted in agriculture, ranching, and coal mining. Since the late 19th century, the town has slowly risen to become one of the best tourism destinations in the west, and a popular resort town come summertime. It certainly doesn’t hurt that some of the nation’s best national parks are within a few hours’ drive when you rent an RV in town, as well as a variety of other landmarks, attractions, and a welcoming atmosphere.
When you book an RV in Sheridan, you are immediately opening yourself up to scenic lands and epic stretches of wilderness. It is no secret that Wyoming is a popular haven for outdoor recreation, as well as one of the nation’s most sparsely populated states. Keyhole State Park is one of the many places you can bring your Sheridan RV rental when you want to experience tranquil forests and dreamy views over a massive lake. Keyhole State Park surrounds the Keyhole Reservoir, a large human-made lake on the impounded Belle Fourche River. The lake is lined with rocky bluffs that offer dazzling views at sunset and sunrise, and the lake itself is ideal for fishing, swimming, and boating. There is a marina at the park where guests can dock their boats and a series of campgrounds that can host you and your Sheridan travel trailer rental overnight.
North of Keyhole State Park, you can find Devils Tower National Monument, a unique and beautiful geological formation over 5,000 feet high. The name Devils Tower was given to the landmark in the 19th century, yet the native population has called it “Bear Lodge” for over 1,000 years. Aside from gazing at this magnificent natural landmark, rock climbing and bouldering on the rugged outcropping has become quite popular over the years.
Bighorn National Forest is close to Sheridan, so you hardly need to spend any time driving your Sheridan motorhome rental to get there. The forest has towering mountains, evergreen forests, and epic landmarks like the Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark, ceremonial remnants of a culture that has inhabited the Big Horn Mountains for millennia.
Farther to the west lies two of the country’s most legendary wilderness areas, Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone is a natural hotspot for volcanic and geological activity. This enchanting wilderness is full of stunning wildlife, geothermal geysers like Old Faithful, and campgrounds. Grand Teton National Park has towering mountains, and even some ski and snowboarding resorts for those who enjoy extreme sports.
Campgrounds are incredibly easy to find when you book a camper rental in Sheridan, so you don’t need to stress out about planning where to stay. Lazy R Campground just outside of town is a pet-friendly park at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains. There are restrooms, hot showers, big campsites, and wireless internet at this year-round campground.
Peter D’s RV Park is located in town, with many of the usual amenities like bathrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and massive pull-through campsites for even the largest RVs on the market.
Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA has a swimming pool, a mini-golf course, a sauna, a hot tub, and a fishing area for anglers to test their skills. There are also dozens of other choices to consider when in town, depending on what you want and how close to nature you want to be with the campervan rental from Sheridan.
Considering it's a small mountain town in Wyoming, Sheridan is quite a peaceful, wonderful town to explore in between treks out into the countryside. There are breweries, cafes, restaurants, and interesting shops selling western wear on every road, and a bevy of historical buildings reminiscent of the days when cowboys and outlaws had gunfights in the streets in front of old saloons. The Don King Western Museum pays homage to this period of time, containing a vast number of old artifacts like saddles, weapons, and cowboy attire. You can learn all about the Wild West in this informative museum, and maybe even pick up a few things at the gift shop on the way out.
The Trail End State Historic Site and the Historic Sheridan Inn are two of the town’s oldest and most special buildings, built in the first years after it was settled. The Sheridan Inn was built in 1892, providing a luxurious stopover for travelers heading to and from the western states. Trail End State Historic Site is a gorgeous old mansion owned by a rancher turned politician in the early 20th century. You can tour the household and see real family heirlooms and other fascinating artifacts helping to paint a picture of what life was once like in the early 1900s.
WYO Theater is one of the very first theaters ever opened in Wyoming, and the longest running by far. This vaudeville-themed establishment plays host to a number of stage performances and live concerts. The theater was once a picture house only showing feature films, but now serves a variety of purposes, including the preservation of history. You can’t miss this Art Deco masterpiece when you walk through town.
