Shepherd is a small village just about slap bang in the center of Michigan, in Isabella County. The countryside around the village is mostly flat farmland, but you don’t need to travel far when you book an RV rental in Shepherd before you venture into more hilly and wooded terrain.
Just to the north is the city of Mount Pleasant offering all the facilities you need and a little further to the east is the larger city of Midland. Less than an hour west in your RV rental from Shepherd will bring you to the edge of the Huron-Manistee National Forests, that covers almost 1 million acres of land. Keep going through the forest, and you’ll soon find yourself at the edge of Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes of North America.
Just west of Mount Pleasant is the Deerfield Nature Park. Covering almost 591 acres, the park gives you access to eight miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing along the Chippewa River and a kayak/canoe launch area. In the winter, the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, and there is a sledding hill. Lastly, two 18-hole disc golf courses plus volleyball and horseshoe courts are available, and there are picnic areas and covered pavilions.
Linking the cities of Midland and Clare, the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail is a 30-mile scenic hiking and cycling route that is paved and flat all the way. There are several staging points along the trail, with restrooms, parking suitable for a motorhome rental from Shepherd, and other facilities. Part of the route between Midland and Sanford follows the Tittabawassee River and for a shorter hike, you can break at Sanford where there are a park and a lake.
Close to Midland and a short drive away when you rent an RV in Shepherd is the Chippewa Nature Center, a nature education center covering over 1,200 acres. There’s a host of annual events focused on the outdoors, nature trails and a visitor center and are some 19 miles of hiking trails passing rivers, ponds and wetland landscapes. In the winter, there is the opportunity to explore the center on cross-country skis or snowshoes. The Visitor Center has a range of exhibitions and a wildlife viewing area.
Situated in Breckenridge, on the banks of the Pine River, is the River Ridge Family Campground. As the name suggests, this campground is perfect for families, with a heated swimming pool, a swimming beach on the river, spa and sports facilities. You can choose a site under the shade of the trees along the river’s edge, or they have sunny sites also available. From the 152 sites available, you can choose either full hook-up or just electric and water, plus all sites have fire pits and picnic tables. This could be the perfect family vacation spot in your luxury RV rental from Shepherd.
Sitting on the edge of the 42-acre Grewes Lake, the Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Park resort has just about everything you need for a fun-packed family vacation. The site is fully paved, has sites up to 90 foot long, offers full hook-ups and free WiFi. The facilities include a heated pool and sauna, fishing and boating lake with boat hire on-site, sports facilities and much more. Bring your RV rental from Shepherd and stay one day, a week, or even longer.
Each April since 1958 the Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival has taken place in the village, and it has now evolved into a 3-day event. The aim of the event has always been to raise funds for community support, including a children's summer camp, building community parks and sports facilities. With music, parades, arts, and crafts, plus of course lots of pancakes and maple syrup it’s a great event for the whole family.
In nearby Midland are Dow Gardens and Whiting Forest. The two areas are connected by a small lane and were originally the home of Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow and family, but they are now open to the public. In the gardens, you will find 110-acres of stunning annuals and perennials, water features including a stream and small waterfall, and a children’s garden.
In Whiting Forest, there is a 1,400-foot long canopy walkway among the trees, up to 40 feet high in some places, giving wonderful views through the forest. In addition there are ponds, meadows, and orchards to explore, a playground for the younger generation and a cafe for some welcome refreshments.
The Mount Pleasant Discovery Museum is a truly interactive world for children. The range of exhibits is designed for kids to have fun while they learn about the natural world. There are exhibits about understanding light, how air pressure works, how water pressure works, and many others. All great fun and think of the memories you are making together on this great outdoor adventure.
