Sedalia is the county seat of Pettis County, Missouri; it was platted as Sedville in 1857, then incorporated as Sedalia in 1860. The city grew quickly through the combined influence of railroads and the presence of military personnel during the American Civil War. It began as a cowtown with a colorful reputation, but in time, attracted more and more families, leading to increases in schools, churches, and other conservative establishments. A glider plane base was built to the west of Sedalia during World War II but was later converted to a bomber base named after a Sedalia native who was killed at Pearl Harbor. Sedalia is known as “The Trailer Capital of the Midwest” because of the number of mobile home manufacturers and dealers. It has strong ties to movies and TV shows (including the movie version of M*A*S*H*).

RV rentals in Pettis County are your introduction to this colorful and unique culture. While you are here, consider visiting a few other nearby communities. Marshall has a rich music culture and was home to Jim the Wonder Dog who could (presumably and accurately) guess the gender of unborn babies, follow commands issued in numerous foreign languages and predicted the winners of numerous Kentucky Derbies. Boonville was named after the sons of famed American Daniel Boone; the sons exported salt distilled from natural springs in the area. California has a vibrant arts community that includes a downtown art studio offering classes, a Cultural Heritage Center with several historically-oriented wall murals, year-round live theater performances, and more. Clinton is the western terminus of a popular rail trail (the Katy Trail) that follows an abandoned railroad winding its way through a state park. Warrensburg is the site of a famous trial about the killing of “Old Drum” (a dog whose statue sits in front of the Warrensburg Courthouse). Your Sedalia travel trailer rental is how you will experience this area in comfort.

The Great Outdoors

Knob Noster State Park is a combination of open oak woodland and prairie and is divided by Clearfork Creek which runs through the park. Anglers can troll or fly fish in the creek; families can enjoy a scenic picnic. There are trails for hiking and mountain biking, and horseback riding and canoeing or kayaking are allowed. Visitors should be on the lookout for butterflies, tortoises, and other wildlife residents. Keep your Sedalia camper rental nearby, and you can take your catch of the day straight to a fridge.

Head 40 miles north with the Sedalia RV rental and explore Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park, which contains a historic Indian village, an old fort, and numerous burial grounds. There is an Indian Cultural Center on-site with displays and exhibits tracing the history of the area's first people. The park consists of a freshwater marsh, and bottomland and upland forests; the trees provide shade and shelter for the campground and picnic sites. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the trails for hiking; in some areas, like the marsh, there is an elevated walkway and park management encourages visitors to stay on the designated path in order to protect the plant life and ecosystems.

Grand Pass Conservation Area was initiated in 1980 and has expanded in size since then; it consists of wetlands, timber tracts, and river islands. Levees, water control structures, and pumps help to control water levels and provide flooded habitat for migratory birds and marshes for resident and breeding wildlife. Hunting, fishing, and trapping are allowed, and visitors can camp, bird and wildlife watch, or enjoy boating on the river. Public restrooms are available.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds visitors can choose from, and some of them may have mobile homes. Your Sedalia RV trailer rental is your guarantee of a relaxing and enjoyable vacation no matter where you decide to stay.

Missouri State Fair campground is a no-frills RV park that rents sites by the day year-round. Most sites have full hookups, but there is no water hookup between the end of October and beginning of April (due to weather conditions); the park is pet-friendly to leash animals. Campfires are not allowed, and reservations are not required; sites are rented on a first come, first served basis, except in August when the Missouri State Fair is underway.

Exploring The City

Visitors to Sedalia should begin their tour of the city with a visit to a monument in the Missouri State Fairgrounds celebrating the city's history as a cattle drive destination and railhead (cattle were brought to Sedalia to be shipped farther on by rail). It is next to a park where guests can picnic after seeing the monument. The city has an arts community and guests can check out the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art and an art gallery and framing center. Visitors to the museum can view the exhibits inside as well as outside and wander the grounds at their leisure. The exhibits constitute a variety of art forms, including photography, pottery, and others.

When dinner time is getting close, Sedalia is a good place to be. Prices aren't that expensive, and there is a good variety of different cuisines to be had. Barbecue is legendary here in Missouri, and one local barbecue venue serves up delicious fare with your choice of side dishes. The dining area is large and has a great atmosphere; windows wrap around it on three sides, adding to the feeling of roominess. Especially recommended is the Smoked Sausage Platter with coleslaw and fried corn, and a root beer float for dessert. Portions are big, so expect to take your leftover dinner home to your Sedalia motorhome rental for a late-night snack.
