Scottsbluff is the largest city in Nebraska’s panhandle and serves as a hub for visitors touring the state’s sparsely populated western half. The landscapes surrounding Scottsbluff are some of the most beautiful examples of America’s Great Plains region. However, most people booking RV rentals in Scottsbluff are coming to see the massive rock formation that sits just outside of town at Scotts Bluff National Monument.

The 800-foot-tall Scotts Bluff served as a landmark for pioneers on the Oregon and Mormon trails in the early 1800s. However, when the trans-continental railroad was built in the 1860s, it lost much of its importance as the tracks were constructed farther south, between the cities of North Platte and Cheyenne, Wyoming. Today it’s one of the most popular attractions in the Nebraska Panhandle.

The Great Outdoors

Your first stop for outdoor adventure should be Scotts Bluff National Monument – the main reason most people visit this town (although the monument is actually in the town of Gering). There are several hiking trails that proceed to the summit of the bluff, all of which are less than a mile long. However, there’s also plenty to explore besides the striking rock formation, as there are over 3,000 acres of foothills within the monument’s boundaries.

Lake Minatare is another popular hangout, particularly with anglers. One of the biggest surprises here is the lighthouse located at one end of the lake. It doesn’t serve a nautical purpose, but it does have a cool observation deck for viewing the surrounding area.

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, near the town of Harrison, is an excellent day trip destination when you get an RV rental in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. It’s one of the most productive fossil beds in the country, and many hikers come upon some of their own when visiting. Just be sure to leave them and enjoy them where they are. The visitor’s center has some great exhibits demonstrating how the fossils were found, and the work paleontologists are doing to reassemble them.

If the kids need to run around a little and burn off some excess energy, there’s no better place to do it than the Riverside Discovery Center. Many visitors come for the playground, but there’s also an interesting animal center that’s home to tigers, primates, and a whole host of bird species.

RV Parks

Finding a good place to camp with your motorhome rental in Scottsbluff is a cinch, with some of the best parks and campgrounds just outside the city limits. One of the closest places to take your Scottsbluff RV rental is Riverside Campground, on the edge of Scotts Bluff National Monument. It’s administered by the city and offers full hookups for your Scottsbluff camper rental, along with bathrooms, a playground for the kids, and a disc golf course. Its location near the North Platte River also makes it popular with anglers.

Robidoux RV Park is just down the road from Scotts Bluff National Monument and also has full hookups, showers, a playground, and a basketball court. It’s also the closest park to Wildcat Hill State Recreation Area if you’re thinking about hiking there.

There’s also Captain Critters Country Campground just off Highway 26 and a short distance to the northwest of the city. They have full hookups for your travel trailer rental from Scottsbluff or water and electrical only if that’s what you’d prefer. They’re also pet-friendly and quite close to shopping centers and restaurants.

If nothing else, you can post up in the parking lot of the local Walmart, which is right off Highway 26. You’ll need to get the manager’s permission first, and there won’t be any amenities, but it could be a good option if you’re only staying a night or two.

Exploring the City

Although most visitors who rent an RV in Scottsbluff are coming for the national monument, there’s a fair amount to enjoy in town too. For a little culture, check out the Midwest Theater, an amazing community venue that hosts concerts, film screenings, and dramatic performances. Take a look at their schedule and see if anything interesting is happening when you get an RV rental in Scottsbluff.

There’s also a weekly farmer’s market, even during the winter months, where residents come to sell their finest produce, baked goods, and handicrafts. Before your trip, find some great recipes, pick up a few ingredients at the market, and then enjoy a gourmet camping experience.

Animal lovers will adore the Riverside Discovery Center on the banks of the North Platte River. It’s the only zoo in western Nebraska and houses over 70 different species including chimpanzees, Siberian tigers, zebras, and a whole host of snakes. There’s even a children’s zoo where the little ones can get up close and personal with some of the tamer species.
