Once the home of Lenape Native American (which were called the Delaware Indians by the English), Schuylkill Haven saw its first European settlers in early 1730s. The first known settler was John Fincher, who is considered to be the unofficial founder of this town. He received a land grant for 225 acres in 1750 and built a home and a barn near the Schuylkill River. The next known settler came 25 years later, in 1775. Martin Dreibelbis, a German immigrant, built a house, a saw-mill, distillery, and a grist mill. He later built a second home in what would become a part of the modern-day downtown area, and for this reason, he is considered the first official resident of the town.

Schuylkill Canal is often associated with Schuylkill Haven. Built in 1825, it stretched over 100 miles, connecting Philadelphia to Port Carbon. This allowed for easier and faster transport of raw, bulk material, such as anthracite (coal), wood, ores, and produce and grains from the local farms. After railroads became more inexpensive and widespread, the canal’s use declined. It was eventually decommissioned in 1915. Pennsylvania tore down or filled in the canal in the subsequent decades in an effort to remove coal silt and other pollutants from the Schuylkill River.

Schuylkill is pronounced as: “SKOO-kill.”

The closest large town is Reading, about 30 miles south and is pronounced (“RED-ing”).

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to book an RV in Schuylkill Haven would be to gain access to the Pennsylvania's outdoor without having to endure the discomfort that camping brings. Mosquitoes, rocky soil, and the lack of privacy. Though this area has been heavily farmed, there are several pockets of wilderness. Blue Mountain, a particular mountain ridge that often seems blue from a distance due to the perpetual humidity in the area, is just a few minutes away. There are several state game lands around in which hiking, biking, camping, and of course, hunting are popular activities. The two largest, No 80 and 264, encompasses a few thousand acres. Deer, bear, and small game, such as turkey, grouse, and rabbits, are typical bags. Be sure to check the schedule for the hunting seasons and wear blaze orange. Hunters are required to obtain the appropriate permits and gun licenses; Pennsylvania’s game managers are very strict and have been known to enact hefty fines for violations for going over the bag limit or for hunting without permits.

The Schuylkill River Trail, a multi-use trail, stretches 60 miles from Philadelphia to Reading, PA. Pottsville, a small town along the route, has a free bike share program (must have a valid driver’s or state ID), which are allowed to venture on this trail. The trail is a wonderful way to see the countryside, enjoy the fresh air, and even spot the local wildlife. What a perfect spot to park your Schuylkill Haven RV rental and get in some exercise.

RV Parks

When you make arrangements to rent a motorhome in Schuylkill Haven, don’t forget to figure out where to park overnight. Gotta grab your 8 hours of Zs, after all. There are several campgrounds in the area, and some state game land parks allow overnight parking (check with the park management or rangers).

Mountain Springs Camping Resort is a large site with almost 300 acres of land. Because the property is so large, some lots are quite private. Guests are able to choose from wooded or open spaces, WiFi is free (although in the wooded areas, it may be spotty), and there are plenty of amenities like planned activities, fishing ponds, and a gaming arcade.

Exploring the City

Out in the boonies where the mountains loom, and towns are few and far in between, it’s easy to think that there isn’t much to do in the area. In fact, there are plenty of places to see and activities that one can partake in. A Schuylkill Haven camper rental makes it easy to get around and explore. Hawk Mountain is part a scientific research center, part a learning facility, part a wildlife sanctuary all wrapped up. Several species of raptors and bald eagles are residents who make their home on this mountain. The nonprofit organization, which owns the land, regularly holds workshops and weekend programs at which spectators can get close-up looks at raptors, falcons, and eagles. This park has several miles of trails, some of which are challenging but rewarding. Photographers and bird-watchers will have opportunities to observe them in their natural habitat. Heads up: there are trail fees which are put toward keeping the nonprofit running. Dogs are not permitted.

Yuengling & Son, the oldest brewing company in America, was born in Pottsville, PA. The home of Frank D. Yuengling, who was one of the generational owners, is both a museum and a culture/event center. Built in 1913, it’s a gorgeous example of Tudor-Jacobean architecture. The Yuengling Brewery, also in Pottsville, is open to tours, and the facility still has some of the original features, like hand-dug caves that were used as a makeshift refrigerator to keep beer fermentation at an optimal temperature. Sneakers are required. Check online for the tour schedule.
