Named in honor of Saint Anthony de Padua, San Antonio was established in 1881 as a Catholic colony by Edmund Dunne. The former chief justice of the Arizona territory founded the settlement from a piece of land he earned as a commission from the Disston Land Purchase. As a result, many of the original colonists had Irish and French, and subsequently, German ancestry.

For a short time in the late 1920s, the small town was renamed Lake Jovita after the crystal clear lake found nearby. Today, "San Ann" is a suburb of and within a 45-minute drive of Tampa. While close to city action, its tree-lined, two-lane roads and gently graded terrain lend it a rural feel, making it an ideal base to explore central Florida’s offerings with one of the RV rentals in San Antonio.

Discover San Antonio

Close Encounter with the Marine Kind

Carved out of the Green Swamp Wilderness Area, the 5,000-acre Colt Creek State Park is home to dense clusters of cypress trees, large stands of pine flatwoods, and open pastureland. It’s only a half an hour’s drive by San Antonio camper rental yet feels removed from traces of town life. The park is crisscrossed by miles of winding creek and 15 miles of multi-use trails ideal for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. The lakes and other watering holes here attract not only anglers but also a multitude of wildlife like otters, alligators, and wading birds.

A little more than an hour's drive by motorhome rental from San Antonio, you have a choice whether to dig your heels into white sand or see manatees swim in pristine water by the hundreds. Clearwater is a seaside city overlooking the Gulf of Mexico deservedly famous for its sugar sand beaches and a constant supply of warm weather (low 70s even in winter). Clearwater beckons beachgoers with an average of 360 days of sunshine per year. Miles of powdery white sand beaches and clear, aquamarine water await along with just-caught seafood and spectacular sunsets.

Crystal River, on the other hand, is a coastal city more popular with sea-dwelling creatures fleeing the Gulf coast waters when temperatures start to dip. Manatees flock to the constant warmth of Crystal River’s spring-fed waters. The Three Sisters Springs is one of the few places in North America where manatees swim in large congregations, and where swimmers are allowed to meet (from a safe distance) these gentle grazers underwater.

Where to Park your RV

There are quite a few places to park an RV rental near San Antonio, FL, given its proximity to Tampa. You don’t have to look far to pull into a welcoming campground for a comfortable stay. More than a dozen campgrounds with RV sites are found within a 10-mile radius, several of which cater to the 55+ crowd. Most of these campgrounds offer full hook-up sites with up to 50 amp service, restrooms, and showers while a few have hot tubs and swimming pools.

Look farther and you’ll have plenty more options within a 30-mile radius. While a good number of campgrounds advertise as 55+ RV parks, a few accept families, and vice versa. Some parks may not openly say they’re adults-only, but on arrival, you may see overwintering seniors staying semi-permanently.

If you don’t need to hook up to water or electricity, you can dry camp at a Walmart parking lot after approval from the store manager. The closest Walmart stores are at Wesley Chapel, Dade City, and Zephyrhills, all within a half an hour's drive by camper rental from San Antonio. There are few gas stations in town and if you miss stopping by at one, you can make a gas stop in Zephyrhills and Dade City where numerous gas stations can be found.

Catholic Abbeys, Kumquats, and Big Cats

St. Joseph, one of the surviving Catholic outposts that surround San Antonio, bills itself as the "kumquat capital of the world". But it's nearby Dade City that hosts the annual celebration of the Kumquat Festival held in late January. Rent a motorhome in San Antonio and come to St. Joseph a few days before the one-day event for kumquat grove and packing house tours. Then join the revelry in downtown Dade City on festival day to sample kumquat treats (pies, smoothies, and even salsa), shop for arts and crafts, and view antique cars. It's a well-attended event where you can experience "Old Florida" for one day.

While here, set foot in a lush 22-acre botanical garden, home to hundreds of animals rescued from around Florida and other parts of the country. Some of the more exotic residents are leopards, jaguars, and black mane lions. You don't need to travel to Madagascar to see ring-tailed lemurs; you can see them here. Another popular resident is an elusive rhesus macaque that was eventually captured and now housed in the zoo.

When Judge Dunne platted what would eventually become San Antonio, he also planned for another Catholic colony among the rolling hills and forest on Lake Jovita's southern shores. On this elevated ground, the Saint Leo Abbey was established in 1889. Benedictine monks live in the Abbey today, but they allow visitors to see the church, wander in the surrounding area, and browse their gift shop. The Holy Name Monastery (for women) is also open to the public for visits.

Seafood, BBQ, and Mexican fare are some of the local offerings in San Antonio, but you can also find quick bites like sandwiches, salads, and pizza in a few places. St. Leo's Abbey leases out a portion of their grounds to a restaurant serving American cuisine but if you want more variety, drive your San Antonio RV rental to Dade City. Here, you'll find not only upscale entrees but also pub grub, healthy options, and comfort food.

In Florida, you have plenty of sunshine all year long to discover what its quirky geography and exotic attractions has in store for you. Some of them may require taking the path less traveled, but you’ll be amazed just the same. Book a camper rental in San Antonio, FL today and experience the Sunshine State for real.
