Sunny, scenic Sacramento is just waiting to be explored. California’s capital city is packed with historical sites and structures, abundant nightlife, and an exceptional farm-to-table restaurant scene. Line up a rental motorhome in Sacramento and be on-site to tour some of the city’s best attractions, including the California State Railroad Museum, the Old Sacramento State Historic Park, Crocker Art Museum, and the dignified capitol building.

Give the Sacramento RV rental a rest and take advantage of the Sacramento Regional Transit District’s services. Transit options include light rail and buses, with routes that’ll take you from downtown to the farthest outskirts of the city. Amtrak also services Sacramento, so you can even take a train to other California cities, like San Francisco, Oakland, and San Luis Obispo. With many grocery stores, gas stations, camping supply stores, convenience stores, and other services around, RV camping in Sacramento is easy.

Discover Sacramento

The Great Outdoors

Sacramento’s surrounded by some pretty fantastic natural terrain. The city was initially established where the Sacramento and American rivers meet, and these waterways continue to serve the area. Sutter’s Landing Park borders the American River. It houses lots of recreational facilities, and it’s a great place to go for some urban outdoor fun. Hike the paved trail, stop by the skate park, or head to the two-acre dog park for some quality time with your four-legged travel companion. Hikers can pick up the 32-mile Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail across the river at Discovery Park. Visitors who’d prefer to stay put can enjoy a picnic and a little target practice at the archery range.

For kayaking and canoeing, Sacramento can’t be beaten. Splash in an hour’s drive south of the city at Brannan Island State Recreation Area for a relaxing day of paddling on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. For some rapids action and extra stunning sights, head two hours’ drive north to Balls Ferry and follow the river south to Red Bluff. It’s a 30-mile stretch, so pack a cooler (and maybe a tent), plan a pick-up point, and set off for an adventure down California’s largest river.

Yosemite National Park sprawls two hours’ drive southeast of Sacramento. Fuel up the rental rig for a day trip to explore the park’s unique landscapes. Hiking and biking are prime park exploration methods, though equestrians can put hooves on the ground here, too. Giant sequoias reach for the sky in Mariposa Grove, and Yosemite Valley awes in the park’s center. But what about waterfalls? This place has them covered. Some of the notable falls include the towering Yosemite Falls, the shorter but scenic Vernal Fall, and the often-roaring Bridalveil Fall, though there are several more to see.

RV Parks

RV rentals can be parked at one of the many campgrounds and RV parks in Sacramento. Accommodations range from basic facilities to amenity-packed, full-service RV resorts.

The Sherwood Harbor Marina and RV Park is in West Sacramento and features campsites with full hookups, plus on-site laundry facilities, restrooms, a convenience store, and a pump-out station. Adjacent to the Sacramento River, this RV park is a great place to enjoy water sports like kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.

SacWest RV Park and Campground is another place to park the motorhome rental in West Sacramento. Pull into one of the full-hookup campsites at SacWest, and you’ll be on the scene for some waterfront RV camping fun. The little Lake Washington pond pools along the southern edge of the park, offering some tranquil views and a spot for fishing (but not swimming). Head to the on-site pool for splashing or sunbathing, or zero in on one of the WiFi hotspots to catch up on communications.

Get away from the city at the Ponderosa RV Resort in Lotus, a 45-minute drive northeast of Sacramento. In the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, you’ll be right near the rushing waters of the American River. This family-friendly RV park hosts activities and has several recreational facilities. Let the kids loose on the playground or lounge by the swimming pool. RV campsites at Ponderosa RV Resort are available with full hookups or water and electric-only connections.

Exploring the City

Set aside a day (or several) to check out Sacramento’s array of urban attractions. Come hungry; this city is famous for its farm-to-table restaurants. After a locally-sourced meal, put on your shopping shoes. Downtown Commons and the Pavillions Shopping Center should keep you busy for a while. For a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, visit the Pocket-Greenhaven neighborhood, with small, locally-owned stores. Pick up some produce while you’re out and about; Sacramento hosts several farmers’ markets, including the Midtown Farmers Market on Saturdays and the Certified Farmers Market on Sundays.

For sightseeing and a little learning, visit the California State Capitol building for a walk through its museum. Brush up on local legislation, state history, and the structure’s intricate architecture, and view portraits of past governors. The famous Crocker Art Museum is located in a beautiful, historic building and features both modern and classic art. Sutter’s Fort captures the history of pioneers who traveled across the country in their quest for riches. Kids of all ages shouldn’t miss the Powerhouse Science Center for fun and interactive educational displays. For a truly unique experience, visit the Museum of Medical History.

Fermented grape guzzlers and cabernet connoisseurs can venture out to sample flavors at some of the best vineyards in the world. Draw straws for who’s driving, pack some snacks into the Sacramento campervan rental, and set out for a wine-tasting road trip. Guided tours are also an option if you want to leave your rig parked.

Expect some rest, relaxation, and maybe even a little adventure when you book an RV rental in Sacramento.
