Named after the 19th-century Roselle Land Improvement Company, Roselle is a small borough on the western outskirts of Elizabeth. It was famously used by Thomas Edison to demonstrate how an entire community could be lit with electricity transferred by overhead wires.

Today, Roselle is a laid-back residential area on the doorstep of Newark and New York City, making it the perfect place to rent an RV. You’re never far from mountainous hiking trails, wildlife refuges, and family-friendly recreational areas, not to mention townships brimming with Revolutionary War history.

Discover Roselle

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Roselle and head to Warinanco Park, which hugs the eastern edge of the borough. It’s home to the Warinanco Lake where you can go boating and the Warinanco Ice Rink, which forms part of the Warinanco Park Sports Center. Admire the blooming tulips in the Henry S. Chatfield Memorial Garden or stroll through the Caxton Brown Memorial Azalea Garden, with the park particularly well known for its brightly colored spring blooms.

Continue driving east, and you’ll arrive in the city of Elizabeth, which is home to the scenic Elizabeth River Parkway. This large, riverfront park is popular with anglers thanks to its fishing banks, as well as being home to a range of sports fields, basketball courts, and children’s playgrounds. The Elizabeth River Parkway connects with the ballfields of Mattano Park before the waterway flows into Newark Bay.

If you want to stretch your legs, make the short drive northwest to the Watchung Reservation - the largest nature reserve in Union County. It sprawls between the peaks of First Watchung and Second Watchung Mountains, with plenty of hiking and horseback riding trails traversing the wooded slopes. At the heart of the reservation lies the Loop Playground that’s always popular with kids while Lake Surprise offers fishing and boating. At the southern edge of the park is the Trailside Nature & Science Center where you can gain an insight into the local ecology.

RV Parks

Book a travel trailer rental in Roselle and drive east to the Liberty Harbor RV Park, which features 50 RV sites at the gateway to New York City. Enjoy the NYC views while taking advantage of the on-site laundry room and Wi-Fi, as well as a restaurant that’s convenient if you don’t feel like cooking.

If you’ve got a military ID, you can also book a spot at the Navy Earle MWR RV Park, which has just 15 sites located within the military base. Select between their 20, 30 and 50-amp service sites, with Wi-Fi, picnic tables, and grills also available.

Alternatively, you can make the 10-minute drive into Union that has a more extensive range of services, as well as a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Roselle and discover the borough’s Revolutionary War history on foot, stopping to visit the Abraham Clark Memorial House. This replica home was built in 1941 after a fire destroyed the original home of Abraham Clark, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The house is a short walk from Roselle’s Abraham Clark High School and just 10 minutes’ drive from the township of Clark (both of which were named in his honor).

Roselle makes a good base for exploring the charming streets of Cranford, which lies just five minutes’ drive to the west. See the oldest continuously operated commercial building in New Jersey at Droescher’s Mill and experience what life was like during the 18th century at the historic Crane-Phillips House Museum. Identified as an "American Treasure” and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this Victorian cottage features permanent and changing exhibits that depict three centuries of local history.

Roselle is also an ideal base for visiting Newark, which lies just 20 minutes’ drive to the northeast. Step inside the soaring Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart or browse the American paintings on display at the Newark Museum, then continue driving through Jersey City to New York. Soak up the views of Manhattan while walking along the High Line or explore the eateries and art galleries of the Chelsea Market, then settle in for a show in the legendary theater district of Broadway.

Roselle is home to a couple of supermarkets where you can purchase groceries, as well as a handful of fast food restaurants and eateries if you want to dine out, not to mention gas stations for filling up your camper rental in Roselle.

Whether you’re visiting Union County for its hiking trails or historical townships, book an RV in Roselle and start exploring.
