First settled in 1767 as a logging camp, Rockland is now a lively tourist destination that serves as the county seat of Knox County. It flourished during the mid-19th century with the shipbuilding and lime production industries before the arrival of the Knox and Lincoln Railroad in 1871 brought an influx of visitors.
Tourism remains one of the town’s biggest industries today, with the harbor serving as a departure point for ferries to the islands of Penobscot Bay. Rockland’s attractive commercial center is packed with art galleries, unique shops, and great places to eat, making it the ideal place to rent an RV while exploring Maine’s Atlantic Coast.
Pick up your camper rental in Rockland and make the short drive east to the Owls Head State Park, which lies on the southern side of the entrance to Rockland Harbor. It’s dominated by a whitewashed lighthouse that can be accessed via a steep set of stairs, or you can follow the short trail that leads down to the park’s small, rocky beach. Soak up the views across Penobscot Bay and back towards Rockland from the top of the rocky cape, then delve into the local history while exploring the old cemetery nearby.
Just north of Rockland near Rockport lies the picturesque Beech Hill Preserve, a conservation property that comprises a number of historic structures with wooded hiking trails. Follow the public hiking trail that leads through the forested lower slopes and up to the exposed, grassy summit of Beech Hill where you’ll find a Norwegian sod-roofed hut that dates to 1913. Enjoy the sweeping views across the Atlantic Ocean from the top, then pick up in-season blueberries from the preserve’s commercial farm.
Continue driving north, and you’ll arrive at Camden Hills State Park, a 5,710-acre recreation area that’s crisscrossed by numerous multi-use trails. Drive to the top of Mount Battie to enjoy the views of Penobscot Bay or follow the hiking trail that leads to the tallest peak in the park, Mount Megunticook, which rises to 1,385 feet. Horseback riding and mountain biking are also permitted on some of the trails, with the park transforming for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing during the winter months.
Book a motorhome rental in Rockland and make the 10-minute drive north to the Megunticook Campground, which overlooks the waters of Penobscot Bay. Aside from the oceanfront observation deck, there are also a swimming pool, a children’s playground, and a volleyball court, with pets welcome to stay with you.
Another nearby option is the Camden Hills Campground, which nestles in a peaceful rural setting near the harbors of both Camden and Rockport. It’s also pet-friendly and features a swimming pool where you can cool off during the summer months, as well as laundry facilities and a clubhouse with kitchen.
Alternatively, you can head south to the Lobster Buoy Campsite where you’ll find 40 sites offering scenic views across the water. Each of the grassy sites has a picnic table and fire ring, and there's a camp store open during the summer months where you can pick up firewood, ice, and other essentials.
You can also make the 10-minute drive into Thomaston and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.
Park your RV rental near Rockland and enjoy a stroll along the main street, which is lined with art supply shops, cafes, and book stores. Admire the breakwater that was established in the 19th century and relax amidst the greenery of Mildred B. Merril Park. Rockland is renowned as a recreational sailing playground and hosts the annual Maine Lobster Festival that celebrates the town’s main export.

A short stroll from the Farnsworth Art Museum is the Center for Maine Contemporary Art where established and emerging artists with ties to Maine are exhibited. They present an exciting calendar of changing exhibitions throughout the year, as well as hands-on workshops, gallery talks, and film screenings. Admire the striking, modern building designed by Japanese architect Toshiko Mori, then explore the three gallery spaces and well-stocked gift shop.
