Ripon, Wisconsin is a phenomenal place to rent an RV and tour the spectacular Midwest region of the United States. This charming town was founded in the mid-19th century by a steamboat captain from New York named David P. Mapes. The name of the town was inspired by Ripon, a town in northern England where some of the original inhabitants came from before emigrating to the United States.

There are lots of perks to visiting this unique town, especially if you have never been to the northern states and experienced their refreshing climates. When you book an RV in Ripon, you can reach larger cities in Wisconsin with ease, like Oshkosh and Milwaukee. Furthermore, it is amazingly simple to make your way to any of the state’s seemingly infinite lakes, ponds, and parks, in a wonderland made for outdoor recreation.

Discover Ripon

The Great Outdoors

One of Ripon’s largest appeals is the abundance of state parks and recreation areas scattered throughout the region, making for an ideal place to rent an RV and customize the trip of your dreams. Devil’s Lake State Park is to the southwest and is a great place to stay for a day or two, with glacial remains and a wide-open lake where you can swim, go fishing, or go boating. There are visitor centers, a nature center, a small portion of the 1,200-mile Ice Trail, and campgrounds where you can stay with your Ripon RV rental by owner.

Buckhorn State Park and Buckhorn Barrens State Natural Area are two adjoining parks with delightful scenery and can both be seen on Castle Rock Lake to the west. These protected areas are home to lots of native wildlife and countless species of migratory birds that stop off to rest on the lakeshore during their 1,000-mile trek. Sandy beaches, refreshing swimming areas, and secluded fishing spots make for some pleasant recreation in the great outdoors when you take your Ripon campervan rental for a multi-day stay at this lovely park by the lake.

Peninsula State Park is farther away, but a great opportunity to see Lake Michigan and camp out on its gorgeous shores. The park is one of the largest in Wisconsin, attracting an estimated one million visitors per year. Here you can see towering bluffs overlooking the lake, historic buildings, an old lighthouse, nature trails weaving through the forest, small islands off the coast, miles of lakefront beaches, a massive campground, and an 18-hole golf course.

In the far northern reaches of Wisconsin, you can truly get in touch with your wild side, probing the sprawling wilderness areas of Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, or any of the state’s other federally maintained forest parks. This particular forest is comprised of two smaller forests, together holding well over one and a half million acres. This evergreen paradise has ample space for trekking and backpacking out into the middle of nowhere, and few fantastic campgrounds too.

RV Parks

There are plenty of RV parks in the area to choose from when you need a place to park your Ripon camper rental overnight. Hattie Sherwood Campground is a seasonal campground close to town, with lakefront access and scenery. Tents and RVs are welcome at the campground, and there is a playground for kids to enjoy, and also a boat launch.

Shady Oaks Campground is also a place to consider, with long and short-term stay options. The lake adjacent to the campground is teeming with several species of fish, so don’t forget to bring your fishing gear.

Puckaway Sands Resort is also situated by the water, within walking distance of several restaurants, grocery stores, and other local features. You can boat, fish, or swim in the lake, or simply get a tan on the sandy shores of Puckaway Lake.

City Attractions

Ripon has lots of small businesses to visit while you rent an RV in town, and some great historical buildings to tour too. Chief among the town’s most interesting attractions is the Little White Schoolhouse, the birthplace of the Republican Party back in 1854. It was in this small schoolhouse where the first incarnation of the Republican Party was planned and brought into existence, with a particular emphasis placed on ending slavery. The building has tours organized by historians and a gift shop where you can pick up a couple of souvenirs.

If you take a ride over to Fond Du Lac, you can see the county seat of Fond Du Lac County, and explore some other regional attractions. The Children's Museum of Fond Du Lac is a wonderful place for families with children to spend the day and a brilliant place to foster an appreciation for the sciences, arts, and environment. There is a hands-on approach to learning in this discovery area, with lots of fun playscapes and interactive experiences for kids to enjoy.

The Historic Galloway House and Village is an invaluable addition to the region’s rich heritage, and you can spend several hours touring this amazing collection of old buildings and homes. Whether you like lavish homes with antique furniture or fully preserved villages complete with roads and old shops, you can step back in time and see the way life was once lived in this fantastic attraction.
