A small town in the northwest corner of the state, Rifle lies on I-70, almost 200 miles west of Denver. The nearest larger town is Grand Junction, around 60 miles to the southwest. This area lies near the border between the drier, more desert-like climate that makes up far, northwestern Colorado and the lusher, pine forests in the eastern portion of the state. There's plenty of national forestland available locally, all of which provides ample recreational opportunities.

Numerous parks and outdoor recreational opportunities can be found near town, as well as multiple city parks, museums, golf courses and unique shops, including an ice cream shop found in a former gas station . The small, downtown area harkens back to the town's Western roots in various ways. At one local restaurant, that plays to the culture of the area, all the waitresses open-carry handguns (this locale has been featured on national news sites).

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

When you book an RV in Rifle, you will have access to multiple, unique sites, including the Rifle Arch Trail. This trail takes hikers to a view of a local rock arch formed by natural erosion. Please note, there is not a lot of shade available on this route so you may wish to consider not tackling it during the heat of the day, at least in the warmer months. It should also be noted that while this is not considered a difficult trail, it is still found at around 6000 feet in elevation, so people from lower altitudes may notice the thinner air when exerting themselves.

This portion of Colorado is very rural, so you may have to travel a little ways to reach some of the sites. The Flat Top Wilderness area is located around 90 miles northeast of Rifle. The area was so named because many of the mountain peaks contained within it are rather flat on top. As Colorado's third largest wilderness area, it offers numerous activities, including camping, hiking, ATV trails, and scenic drives. This is also a prime place to view much of the state's unique wildlife.

Another site in this general region that you won't want to miss is Grand Mesa National Forest. This area is found around 90 miles to the south of town. The forest features camping, hiking, and fishing opportunities, as it contains numerous small lakes. Be aware, this area receives a considerable amount of snow during the long winter months, and it is actually more known for its winter sports. Be prepared for snow that may last well into May. This area is also higher in elevation than much of the surrounding region, so temperatures here may be considerably cooler. At the top of the park's namesake mesa lies an old, forest service, observation station. This site is also known for its overly-friendly chipmunks! When visiting the forest in the summer months, mosquito spray is also highly recommended!

Rifle Falls State Park offers camping as well. Please note, the campground is rather small and tends to fill very quickly during peak times, so reservations are strongly recommended. Electric hookups are available as well as access to potable water. This campground is open year-round.
