Richmond, Kentucky, is the county seat of Madison County, is one of the largest cities in the Bluegrass Region (northern Kentucky). Other nearby cities are Lexington, Winchester, Georgetown, Versailles, and Somerset. The word “Kentucky” means “meadow lands” in many native North American languages, and “bluegrass” is a reference to the blue flowered Poa grass common in northern Kentucky. Richmond is the shopping and working center for south-central Kentucky.

Richmond sits at the base of the Appalachian Mountains and is bordered on the north by the Kentucky River. Like most valleys, it has hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Add a Richmond KY rental RV to this vacation mix and you can take breaks from the summer heat or warm up in winter, as required.

Richmond is important due to its relevance in the American Civil War; when you book an RV in Richmond, there is much to see which should not be missed. Historical events are re-enacted for visitors and local museums contribute even further. Some famous people from Richmond include Daniel Boone and Kit Carson, two legendary figures from the Old West; Earle Combs, former New York Yankee and baseball Hall of Fame inductee; and Jimmy Stokley, singer and member of the band Exile.

In addition to its historical status, Richmond is a lively community with events happening all year round. Local happenings can also be discovered through the Richmond Register, and local radio stations such as WEKY (1340 AM), WCBR (1110 AM), WEKU (88.9 FM), WVLK-FM (101.5 FM), WCYO-FM (100.7 FM) and WLFX-FM (106.7 FM). Visitors can relax in their Richmond RV trailer rental and enjoy the newspaper or music from the local stations along with an evening snack or drink.

Discover Richmond

The Great Outdoors

When exploring the area with a motorhome rental near Richmond, the first stop on anyone's itinerary should be Fort Boonesborough State Park, established by none other than Daniel Boone himself, in 1775. The fort's main presentation is the 1778 Siege of Boonesborough, an important historical event, but it also displays other important topics such as the efforts to settle the west, native people's efforts to protect the land, the hardships and living conditions settlers and natives endured, and more. The fort has a gift shop, where resident artisans make and demonstrate their crafts, which can be purchased for souvenirs.

East Kentucky University has a Daniel Boone monument. This will be your second stop after getting acquainted with the details and facts of his existence, a chance to take a selfie with Daniel (or at least with his statue).

There is a two-hour, self-guided driving tour of the Battle of Richmond. Tour guides can be picked up at the Richmond Visitors Center, and will narrate the journey and answer all your questions. Bring your Richmond rental camper along and serve up lunch and drinks along the way.

Local ranches offer horseback riding, and skeet and trap shooting. Guests can also enjoy pony rides, hayrides, picnics and bonfires, and riding lessons. Overnight and long-term camping accommodation can be had for those who book ahead; bring your Richmond travel trailer rental and step out of your rolling home to mount your horse, and your day has begun.

Golf is popular here and enthusiasts can try any of the nearby courses, Most are private clubs but are open to the public, and also have on-site restaurants to greet you when your game has finished.

Kentucky equals sports enthusiasm and no one meets the challenge like East Kentucky University, which hosts collegiate level teams in sports including NCAA football and basketball. Purchase tickets at the Alumni Coliseum and cheer on one of the home teams.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV resorts in or near Richmond. Most the sites are between Lexington and Mt. Vernon. Fort Boonesborough is located north of Richmond. Farther south you will find Oh! Kentucky Campground and RV Park, and Walnut Meadow RV Park. To the east, in the north end of Daniel Boone National Forest, you will find 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge. To the west, you can choose from Camp Nelson RV Park and Chimney Rock RV Park. Some of these parks are more elaborate than others, but all have the basics (showers, restrooms, and hookups).

Exploring The City

In town, visitors can visit the EKU Center for the Arts or the Paradise Cove Aquatic Center. The EKU Center has music events, Broadway-class theater and more, and serves it up with wine and snacks before the show for a minimal charge. Paradise Cove has a swimming pool with a shallow end for younger children, a deeper section with diving board for teenagers, large slides and a concession stand. Keep your Richmond luxury RV rental nearby and change back into normal clothes and continue on with your travels.

There are a few chain restaurants in town, but most of the restaurants are locally owned. There is everything from steak and seafood to Asian and Indian and most of the restaurants are vegan/ vegetarian-friendly. Start with a walking tour of what's available. Restaurants near Barnes Rd are a little more spread out and might require a little more walking to check out all of them.
