Discover Ray Brook

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental in Ray Brook and head the McKenzie Mountain Wilderness Area, which sprawls to the northeast of the village. It forms part of the extensive Adirondack Forest Preserve and is dominated by the peaks of Saddleback and Moose mountains. Numerous hiking trails wind through the wilderness area, accessing the summits of Haystack Mountain, Whiteface Mountain, and Baker Mountain, which offers incredible views across the Adirondacks.

If you prefer to be out on the water, spend a day enjoying Lake Placid, which is a popular destination for boating and water sports. Test your skills at water skiing and wakeboarding or cast a fishing line to lure rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. Also nearby is picture-perfect Mirror Lake where you can take a dip from the swimming beach or just enjoy the serene reflections from one of the lakeside trails.

Directly south of Ray Brook is the High Peaks Wilderness Area, which encompasses 36 of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks, including the tallest, Mount Marcy. More than 230 miles of hiking trails wind through its rugged and scenic high mountain country, including part of the long-distance Northville-Placid Trail. Its western boundary is marked by the Adirondack Canoe Route, and the park’s a popular destination for cross-country skiing and snowboarding during the winter months.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Ray Brook and head to the Meadowbrook Campground, which lies just east of the city's center. There are both exposed and wooded RV sites to select from and picnic tables throughout the campground, as well as firewood sales on-site.

Continue driving east to the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA in Wilmington, a pet-friendly campsite that’s also accessible to big rigs. There are a swimming pool and a children’s playground, as well as a mini-golf course and hayrides during the warmer months.

Alternatively, drive west to the Fish Creek Pond Campground, which is one of the most popular campgrounds in the Adirondacks. Select from their attractive range of waterfront RV sites, then take advantage of the children’s playground, volleyball court, and boat launch facilities.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Ray Brook and make the 10-minute drive east to Lake Placid, which sprawls along the shores of Mirror Lake. It’s renowned as being a hub for snow sports and a previous venue for the Winter Olympics, with a museum celebrating its sporting heritage. Browse the team uniforms and medals on display at the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, then visit the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society that occupies the town’s old train station to gain an insight into the people and events that have shaped the region.

You can enjoy a leisurely ride on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, which travels along the former New York Central Railroad Company’s tracks from Utica. Soak up the spectacular scenery of the Adirondacks during one of their themed excursions that range from train robbery re-enactments to the Polar Express and the ever-popular Beer and Wine Train. Most trips include a stop in the small town of Remsen where you can stretch your legs while exploring the replica mid-19th-century railway station.

If you’re interested in the Underground Railroad, be sure to visit the John Brown Farm State Historic Site, which includes the home and final resting place of abolitionist John Brown. He moved here in 1849 to establish a community where freed slaves could live and work in peace but was arrested and hanged after assaulting the U.S. Arsenal at Harper’s Ferry in 1858. Join a guided tour to explore his former residence and learn about the mark he left on history or just enjoy a stroll along the scenic trails that wind through the surrounding area.

Ray Brook is home to a small grocery store where you can pick up supplies, as well as a couple of eateries for dining out. There is also a gas station if you want to fill up your camper rental in Ray Brook or you can make the short drive into Lake Placid where there’s a more extensive variety of stores and services.
