Discover Rancho Santa Margarita

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Rancho Santa Margarita combines all the things there are to love about southern California into one place. The towering Santa Ana Mountains are right on the outskirts of town, the beach is just a short drive down the Santa Ana Freeway, and there are lots of shopping opportunities in this urban area. A Rancho Santa Margarita motorhome rental may be the best way to take in all these sites.

Much of this area is still relatively unspoiled. Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park celebrates that status. The park is over 2,500 acres of rolling grassy hills, wooded canyons, and steep sage-covered slopes. Several streams meander intermittently through the park, giving visitors a chance to view rare wildlife and also relive the area’s cattle-raising days. Don’t miss the stunning rock formations or the two dozen trails that criss-cross the area. Some of these trails are family friendly while others are for hikers only. All of them are very well-marked. Tragically, the searing Santiago Fire burned over 90 percent of the park in 2007, so much of the area is still recovering.

The sprawling Caspers Wilderness Park is almost four times as large and located not far away. The largest park in the Orange County system caters to campers. Larger groups can select a pre-made site; smaller groups can basically just find a good spot. The sites are RV friendly and each one has a dump station and an electrical hookup for the Rancho Santa Margarita RV rental. Locals say CWP is a good place to see what Orange County was like back in the day. The wildflowers are quite pretty in the spring, and the horseback riding is good pretty much all year long. Be advised that no dogs or outside firewood are allowed.

O’Neill Regional Park is just down the road in Trabuco Canyon. The 4,000-acre park is basically split into two halves: one for families and one for hikers. Barbecue grills and picnic areas dot the park, as do the 79 different campsites. The larger sites feature horse corrals and firepits. In terms of facilities, there’s a charming country store onsite as well as a large children’s playground and two huge community turf areas. The Trabuco Oaks Steakhouse on Trabuco Oaks Road may also be worth a visit. It’s only open for dinner on most days.

City Attractions

The Florence Joyner Olympiad Park in Mission Viejo is party central if you have kids under 12. It’s also very close to some of the better RV parks in Rancho Santa Margarita. That’s a nice feature, because you’ll need to get to this park early if you want a good spot. A very nice FloJo statue is the centerpiece of a tribute to past, present, and future Olympic athletes. Challenge your kids to find the rainbow Olympic torch. There are very nice facilities on site, and there’s a grocery store around the corner.

For something completely different, try the Laguna Woods Historical Center in Laguna Hills. There are a number of artifacts that document the area’s journey from raw wilderness to working ranch to a thriving urban center. A number of fascinating oral histories tell some of the stories behind these rare objects. The LWHC periodically sponsors lectures and other events.

What’s Unique

One of the biggest advantages of a Rancho Santa Margarita RV rental is that you can experience so much more of the community than you can from a hotel room. You shop where the people shop, go where they go, and experience what they experience. That’s especially nice in a growing community like Rancho Santa Margarita. As late as 2000, the area was little more than a housing development. Now, it’s a full-fledged community with nearly 50,000 residents. As a result, there’s an energy and vibe in this city that is absent in some other communities. Much of the Real Housewives of Orange County tv show is filmed in Rancho Santa Margarita; the community also boasts the Golden State’s longest name, having bested Rolling Hills Estates.

Where to Park It

In addition to the aforementioned O’Neill Regional Park, some of the top RV parks in the Rancho Santa Margarita area include the quiet and picturesque Arroyo Campground. The spaces are huge, so there’s plenty of room for a Rancho Santa Margarita camper rental. There’s no power, so pick up a generator at one of the home improvement stores located nearby. The Ortega Oaks RV Park & Campground is quite nice as well. It has all the facilities you’d expect from a quality RV park and also has lots of well-manicured hiking trails. Try one of the pies at the candy store. You won’t be sorry.

The Food

People who prefer to do their own cooking can find a Ralph’s, Walmart, or other such retailers at practically every major intersection in town. There are also some specialty grocers, like Trader Joe’s, Sprouts Farmers Market, and the El Fenix Carniceria y Mercado on the east side of town. Don’t feel like cooking? One of the great things about Orange County is that practically every ethnicity in the world has some presence in the area. Try a “New Restaurant Night”, wherein once every couple of days or weeks, the family goes someplace that no one has ever been before. Bonus points if the menu features cuisine from another hemisphere.

A Rancho Santa Margarita RV rental is the key to unlocking all these things and more. Start planning your excursion today.
