Put-in-Bay, Ohio is a very small village located on South Bass Island, in the southwest corner of Lake Erie. It is surrounded by several other islands, including Middle Bass Island, Isle St. George and Kelly's Island. The village connects to these, and the mainland, by way of ferry. The bay got the name as boats in the 1700's would "put-in" at this location to hide out from the storms on Lake Erie. The island was eventually named after the Bay. The village is only located around five miles from the mainland, and the nearest town on the mainland is Catawba Island. The nearest large city is Toledo, around 50 miles to the west, and Lake Marblehead is less than 20 miles to the southeast.

Wineries, museums, historical sites and of course, lighthouses are all available to enjoy on the island. Numerous locally-owned restaurants can also be found in Put-In-Bay. The surrounding area also features antique shops, as well as an eclectic blend of restaurants. Other recreational activities found locally include animal attractions and various recreational and natural sites, as well as several parks. Many of these offer hiking, camping and picnicking, and water-based activities. Due to its location, and the fact that this portion of the lake usually freezes in the winter, the island is not accessible by car during the winter months. Some people do remain on the island year-round, with they and their supplies being transported by plane.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

This educational, nature trail is a loop that traverses the local woodland. Perry's Cave is a natural landform situated in the center of the island. The site has historical significance as it contains an underground lake that provided clean drinking water to the American soldiers during the War of 1812. Guided tours and a gift shop are available.

There are also several grocery stores and gas stations located on both the island and the mainland. You may be able to use any of these locales for overnight camping, just check with the owners or managers first. EXPLORING THE CITY

There’s a multitude of attractions near Put-In-Bay that should prove interesting to everyone. One of these is Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. The memorial is there to honor the American victory in the War of 1812, in which the island played a pivotal role. The monument rises over 300 feet above the surrounding landscape and offers a commanding view of the local area. From here visitors and vacationers are able to see both the US and Canada, on clear days, and the monument is open in the evening as well, to offer a bird's-eye, nighttime view.
