Established as a commuter town of Philadelphia, Prospect Park, Pennsylvania sprawls along the banks of Darby Creek as it flows into the Delaware River. It’s home to a Baptist church where the phrase “In God We Trust” is believed to have been born (before appearing on United States coins and currency), as well as one of the oldest buildings in Pennsylvania.

With convenient rail access to Philadelphia and wildlife-filled wetlands on its doorstep, Prospect Park is a popular place to rent an RV and explore everything Delaware County has to offer.

Discover Prospect Park

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Prospect Park and make the short drive east to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, a 1,000-acre reserve that protects the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania. It’s home to deer, raccoons, coyotes, beavers, and river otters, as well as more than 300 species of birds that include warblers, egrets, and sandpipers. Follow the popular Impoundment Trail or canoe along the Darby Creek, with fishing for carp, catfish, and large-mouth bass permitted along the main trail.

Just to the northwest of Prospect Park sprawls the Ridley Creek State Park in the township of Edgmont. Aside from its picturesque cycling and walking trails, it’s home to a magnificent garden designed by the Olmsted Brothers, and the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation where you can discover what life was like on a pre-Revolutionary farm. After visiting the Ridley Creek State Park, take time to admire the staggering diversity of plants and trees in the adjacent John J. Tyler Arboretum.

Closer to Prospect Park lies Crum Woods, a 220-acre tract of forested land that straddles Crum Creek next to the Swarthmore College campus. It encompasses around 3.5 miles of walking trails that explore what is one of the last remaining forested areas in Delaware County. Walk to the remains of Crumhenge, then explore the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College, which is considered one of the most beautiful garden campuses in the United States.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Prospect Park and drive across the Delaware River to the Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA in New Jersey. Aside from its well-equipped pull-through and back-in RV sites, it features a swimming pool, playground, and jumping pillow that kids will love. If you’re traveling with pets, they’re also welcome at the campground and can get some exercise in the off-leash dog park.

Another option is the Philadelphia - West Chester KOA, which nestles in the Brandywine Valley to the west of Prospect Park. It offers direct access to a river for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing while having its own outdoor pool and mini-golf course. In addition to the park’s recreational opportunities, it offers complimentary Wi-Fi and cable TV.

The Walmart at Eddystone Crossings is a 10-minute drive from Prospect Park; you may be able to set up camp here for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near Prospect Park and head to the Morton Homestead, which forms part of the historic Morton Homestead State Park. Founded by Finnish immigrant Morton Mortenson in 1654, the homestead dates back to the area’s formative years as part of the New Sweden colony. It’s home to a cabin that is considered one of the oldest dwellings in Pennsylvania and one of the few surviving examples of 17th-century Swedish log structures in the Delaware Valley.

Enjoy the atmosphere in Park Square, which has become a popular recreational hub in the heart of Prospect Park. It’s home to a basketball court and children’s play equipment, as well as a central pavilion and grassy lawns where you can relax with a picnic. Coincide your visit with one of the summer evening concerts that regularly take place in the park, with everything from string bands to classical music, rock, and pop.

Spend a day exploring the sights of Philadelphia, which is just a 20-minute drive to the east of Prospect Park. It’s renowned for its American Revolution sites, including the famous Liberty Bell and Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed. Have your photo taken outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which has become synonymous with the Rocky movies, and embark on a historic prison tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary. Philadelphia is also known for its foodie culture, with the Reading Terminal Market the place to head for fresh produce and classic Philly treats.

Prospect Park is home to a handful of grocery stores and bakeries where you can stock up on supplies, as well as plenty of eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you want to fill up your motorhome rental in Prospect Park.

Whether you’re visiting Delaware County for its wildlife-filled reserves or Revolutionary history, book an RV in Prospect Park and embark on your next adventure.
