Sharing a name with both the indigenous tribe and the river, Potomac, Maryland is a lively city on the outskirts of the national capital, Washington D.C. This high-income suburb is home to many politicians, making it one of the most affluent towns in the entire country.

Potomac has a storied past, stretching back centuries before the arrival of Europeans on the coasts of the “New World.” The area Potomac now inhabits was a well-used trading crossroads, before becoming a small rural community with an agrarian economy. Once Washington D.C. began to overgrow its borders and spread into surrounding communities, Potomac would slowly morph into the wealthy city it is today.

When you book an RV in Potomac, you won't need to limit yourself to town, as there are lots of things to do or see in the Chesapeake Bay region. Both Washington D.C. and Baltimore are located near Potomac, so getting in and out of these massive city centers is quite easy when you rent an RV intending to enjoy some flexibility and freedom. Furthermore, Maryland has some exceptional parks and beaches, especially along the Chesapeake Bay, a popular vacation spot during the spring, summer, and fall.

Discover Potomac

Explore the Outdoors

Most people are unaware of how green Maryland really is, and you can discover its lush landscape when you bring your Potomac camper rental outside the city and head to the surrounding parks nearby. Seneca Creek State Park is a great example of what you can see and where you can stay when you rent an RV and seek out a peaceful stay at a beautiful park. There are more than 14 miles of creekside habitat in Seneca Creek State Park, a wonderful place for swimming, boating, and fishing. Aside from the creek and a large fishing pond, there is a series of hiking trails, a 27-hole disc golf course, historic structures, and a campground.

Patuxent River State Park is named for the river it resides on, with lovely views and a wide range of activities to take advantage of when you visit. This small park has great fishing and swimming spots in the river, and you can go mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking to make your way around too.

Patapsco Valley State Park is located over by Baltimore, so a stop is warranted if you plan on visiting Maryland’s biggest city when you rent an RV. This incredible outdoor sanctuary was the first state park in Maryland, established back in 1907. There are tons of tranquil nature paths winding their way through forest habitats and over swinging bridges spanning the Patapsco River, and numerous places to ride a mountain bike, go horseback riding, canoe, kayak, go fishing, or have a picnic. There are a few campgrounds where you can stay with your Potomac RV rental, and a nature center for children is on-site too.

A short drive to western Virginia from Potomac is all it takes to see one of the country’s most beloved national parks. Shenandoah National Park impresses with its enchanting roads and stunning scenery. This 200,000-acre wonderland revolves around the famous Skyline Drive, the most prominent feature in the park. The road is just over 100 miles long, spanning the entire park from north to south, with jaw-dropping views of vivid fall foliage and the stoic Blue Ridge Mountains.

RV Parks to Visit

Potomac is unique when it comes to finding a place to camp, as there seems to be a high number of state-owned recreation sites and campgrounds, but hardly any privately-owned RV Parks. Chisel Branch Campground and Turtle Run Campsite are two of the closest public campgrounds that you can make use of, both with peaceful vibes and both teeming with natural wildlife. Both of these campgrounds are found along the Potomac River, so fishing and swimming are part of the fun too.

If you need more than a rustic campground, Washington DC/Capitol KOA Campground is an option. The campground has a large dog park for pet owners, bicycle rentals for touring around town, a pool, and guided tours of the city.

City Sightseeing

Washington D.C. and its surrounding communities make up one of the most interesting and fun places to visit in the country. Countless buildings and monuments adorn the streets and sidewalks of the capital city, paying tribute to the people that helped build the country into what it is today. Nearly every kind of museum imaginable can be found in the capital city, like the world-famous Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. This legendary institution is known around the world for being one of the premier resources for all-natural history. The museum is one of the most heavily visited in the world, welcoming over seven million guests each year. There are over a hundred million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, and meteorites in the collection, as well as cultural artifacts from almost every time period and civilization imaginable.

The Glenstone Museum in Potomac is a magnificent art-centric facility, placing a heavy emphasis on works created after World War II. The museum features lovely indoor and outdoor sections, with wide-open galleries displaying different art mediums.

Of course, there are the classic points of interest that everyone makes a habit of seeing when they rent an RV near the nation’s capital. The Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial are hard to miss, and these cherished symbols of America are an important and beloved attraction for first-time visitors. Simply walking around Washington D.C. is a treat in itself, due to the sheer number of historic buildings and architectural wonders like the White House and the Capitol Building.
