Portsmouth, or P-Town as locals call it, is a small city on the Ohio-Kentucky state line that considers itself a part of the South. The motto states that Portsmouth is “Where Southern Hospitality Begins,” a statement that you will see is true when you rent an RV in this charming community on the Ohio River.

Portsmouth has a complex history dating back thousands of years to when the Hopewell people first made Ohio their home. There is evidence of these distant ancestors scattered throughout southern Ohio, in places like Chillicothe where the great earthen mounds represent ancient cultures that researchers still know very little about. Continuous native occupation of Portsmouth ended just after the Revolutionary War when European settlers began to head for Ohio in large numbers. Portsmouth was established after several other local towns were flooded, becoming the largest city in the immediate area.

Portsmouth went on to become an industrial powerhouse, before later losing many of its jobs to factory closings. This caused a great deal of hardship for residents until a concerted revitalization effort took effect. Now you can book an RV in Portsmouth and enjoy a freshly reconfigured downtown area full of beautiful old buildings, city parks, and landmarks. The Ohio River is lined with walking paths and grassy parks. Both Cincinnati and Columbus are within two hours’ drive of Portsmouth, so you can easily reach either large city with your Portsmouth RV rental.

The Great Outdoors

Scattered throughout southern Ohio, there are a number of amazing state parks, wildlife refuges, and recreational areas lining lakes. A trio of excellent state parks can be found quite close to Portsmouth to the northwest, the closest being Pike Lake State Park. There is a tiny lake in the heart of the park that guests use for swimming, fishing, boating, and kayaking. There are lots of hiking paths intertwining throughout the park, so walking is a great way to get around and see what beauty it holds. You can even camp in Pike Lake State Park at one of its rustic campgrounds when you feel like staying an extra night in your Portsmouth camper rental.

Paint Creek State Park is located north of Pike Lake State Park, situated around the Paint Creek Lake. The human-made lake has marinas, boat launches, fantastic fishing areas, splendid hiking trails on large limestone bluffs overlooking the water, and a large dam. Camping is an option here too. The farthest of the three parks is Rocky Fork State Park which envelops the entire Rocky Fork Lake. Here you can find more of the same features, like marinas, boat launches, hiking paths circling the lake, fishing spots, sandy beaches, swimming areas, and even some archaeological sites left behind by the Hopewell culture of Ohio.

If you don’t mind long drives, you can head up towards Cleveland in your Portsmouth RV rental to visit the lone national park in Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This delightful nature park is one of the smaller and newer national parks in the country, but no less special than the rest. It is easy to reach and bursting with wildlife and beautiful habitats centered around the Cuyahoga River. There are phenomenal nature trails weaving through the dense groves of hardwood trees, and angelic waterfalls scattered intermittently throughout. Cuyahoga Valley National Park isn’t just a beautiful nature park though; there are lots of historic buildings, cottages, cabins, and structures to check out, and a lovely campground where you can park the Portsmouth luxury RV rental.

RV Parks

Camping is truly a treat when you pick up your Portsmouth motorhome rental and begin your trip. There are some excellent options as far as campgrounds go in the area, so you’ll have your pick of the litter. Lazy Village Campground and RV Park is just six miles outside of town, with lots of fun features nearby, with golf courses, marinas on the Ohio River, hunting grounds, and a swimming pool within the park.

Lazy Dog Camp Resort is a great place to kick back and relax, with fishing lakes, hunting grounds, rental cabins, laundry facilities, a swimming pool, a camp supply store, and a restaurant.

Long’s Retreat Family Resort is a child-friendly camping resort near Pike State Forest. There are arcades, waterpark features, swimming areas in the lake, water slides, a camp store, and a whole lot more.

City Sightseeing

Visitors to Portsmouth will find there to be lots of things to do in the fun little city by the river, including walking along the river or through one of the town’s historic districts. Traversing the Ohio River into Kentucky, the U.S Grant Bridge is an iconic landmark in town, although the original bridge was torn down and replaced in 2006 for safety reasons. The bridge is great to walk across and take photos from, with great views of the city and the river itself.

Another fantastic feature you can’t miss when you rent an RV in Portsmouth is the Portsmouth Floodwall Murals, also located down by the river. This stunning set of paintings aren’t your average street art pieces. These elegant murals depict life in Portsmouth from the very beginning before settlers arrived, with snowy landscapes, native villages, freshly built settlements, battle scenes, and more.

The Southern Ohio Museum is a fabulous center for the arts in southern Ohio, with dedicated galleries, showrooms, theaters, and exhibition halls for different forms of art. There are live music concerts and theatrical productions in the intimate theater space, art studios, a gift shop, and a massive collection of Native American art featuring 10,000 pieces of art and everyday tools.
