Portola Valley is a small town in San Mateo County, California. It began as a small lumber town named Searsville in the 1850s but by 1891, the redwood trees that had supplied the lumber were almost completely gone and the town died off. It left behind a reservoir today known as Searsville Lake and a few private ranches. One of the remaining farmers offered a part of his land as the site for a new school; a community soon began to grow around the school, which became known as Portola Village. It grew into a community of small farms, providing strawberries, cattle, and firewood. A few residents were seasonal, some stayed year round, but the town's residential community did not start to grow until after World War II. By the 1960s, rapid growth became a concern and the locals voted to incorporate in 1964. Today the city is a balance of residential and business areas, and undeveloped nature; open green spaces exist within the city and outside of it.
Search for an RV in San Mateo County and you are ready to explore the pristine beauty that still exists in this region. Some other cities are interesting and worth spending some time in, such as Daly City, which became a refuge for victims of the 1906 earthquake which damaged many San Francisco homes. San Mateo passed a resolution in 1968 to officially adopt a platoon of soldiers fighting in Vietnam; it later held a parade for them upon their return in 1972, widely believed to be the only such parade of its kind. Pleasanton's historic downtown area is an example of many of the mid-19th-century architecture styles that were employed. Palo Alto is amongst the most expensive U.S. cities to live in. Pescadero's beaches, parks, and rural roads make it a tourist mecca during the summer. Your Portola Valley RV trailer rental is how you will discover these places and others.
Rancho Corral de Tierra is an undeveloped area originally slated for development but recently rezoned as a protected area. Some trails may be eroded or difficult and visitors should exercise caution in these areas. Some areas near Rancho Corral are privately owned; stables and livestock should not be approached. The park is also home to huckleberries which the birds eat, using the bushes for shelter.
